Final Blog Essay

This final project we had to do is the research through art project.  For this assignment we we required to explore an area of research, whether it be research we are currently doing outside of class or some small research to do just for this class, and then explore this research through art.  We had to express this art through a video about the research using the art skills that we have learned as well as creating a website for our project.  I ended up doing mine on the psychological effects employed by video game boss battles.  Overall I really enjoyed this assignment as it allowed us the freedom to do anything we wanted for the video portion.  I also enjoyed the idea of using art to supplement research. I think that is a great way to help bring information across.

Throughout this class we have learned a variety of skills.  Before taking this class I only had a vague idea of how to use photoshop but now I understand it a lot better.  Certain assignments taught me different skills such as movie making, photo editing, and good photo composition.  The skills I learned in this class I will definitely use in the future.  Having the ability to do a little graphic design goes a long way.  As a computer science major I will be creating websites and programs regularly.  The ability to design these things to look good is a valuable asset.

In the past I’ve never really thought about identity much.  I have thought even less about personal identity.  This class was the first to really bring that to my attention, which segways nicely into my RA leadership class where we discussed the same thing.  Through the usage of art our goal to to explore that identity.  Throughout this class this identity portion of each assignment is definitely the portion I struggled with the most.  Most assignments I was never sure about what the identity component would be, however I believe that I got better at this as the semester went on.

I greatly enjoyed many of the assignments in this class.  They allowed me do activities that I wouldn’t have otherwise done.  For example, A friend of mine and I had been planning on making funny videos for a good portion of the year however we never had the time to do it.  The iMovie project gave us the motivation to actually start making videos.  The iMovie project was probably my favorite assignment.  This is because for that assignment we had to make a video about a story so a friend of mine and I went over to the arboretum across the river to film.  I had previously never been to the arboretum so this assignment transitively allowed my to discover the cool gardens there.  I enjoyed almost every assignment in this class.  What made many of the assignments great was the freedom and the creativity to design each project as creatively as you want.  This class was wonderful and I thoroughly enjoyed each assignment.

Week 11-12 Assignment

For this weeks assignment our goal was to create a video. A friend and asked if we were allowed to work in groups for this one and the answer was yes. We did this because together we could create a much higher quality product than we could individually. While, for this project, we could have just made what is effectively a slide show we instead decided to make a full live action professional-ish looking video. Our video is a random story I wrote about an explorer in the 1500’s. I chose this because I thought that the idea of an Indiana jones style story set in the 1500’s would be cool and because I also connect with this story in that I love exploring. Overall this assignment was very fun to film and our final result is cheesy but entertaining.

Assignment Week 8

For this assignment we were tasked with making some form of art using the 3D functionality of photoshop.  It took me a while but I eventually decided to just make a wine bottle with my friends face on it.  The 3D function of photoshop only has a few default models so I picked to most complicated one to use which was a wine bottle.  I decided to put a picture of my friend on the bottle because I wanted to make something funny and I figured making him into a king on the bottle would be amusing.  Thinking of something to make using the 3D functionality was more difficult than I had originally thought as most of my ideas for a brand identity would have been just a 2d flat picture.

Week 7 Magazine Assignment

For this week’s assignment we had to make a fake magazine cover.  To do this I used a variety of tools within photoshop.  The base photo is a photo of a friend of mine holding a wooden hand.  I then edited this photo using the patch tool to make it look like the wooden hand is his hand.  Then all of the background scenery photos are stock location photos that I edited together.  When making the text I had to add a shadow and a glow to each photo using the blending options so that the text would show up on the dark background.  The fake magazine I made is a magazine about adventuring because I enjoy movies and video games about adventures and I thought that it would be funny to satire the genre a little.

Week 6 Assignment

Long Exposure Photos-

Edited Long Exposure Photos-

This week’s assignment had us taking long exposure photos.  I personally love these types of photographs because using long exposure you can create all sorts of cool and interesting effects.  For most of the regular long exposure shots I tried to take advantage of using light sources as either laser blasts or orbs of energy.  Using the lights in these ways produces really awesome looking light effects.  In the second set of photos I used photoshop to edit the photos in cool ways.  The first photo I attempted to make it look like a stained glass window because I thought the original photo looked angelic.  The second photo I tried to make it look even more dramatic than it was before. The final photo initially looked intimidating and ethereal so I tried to capitialize on that with photoshop.

Week 5 Assignment

Somewhat professional looking photos-

Highly Photoshopped photos-

Within portrait photos you can communicate identity through positioning and the background.  Different styles and positions show your creative side or emphasize different factors that you find important such as the artistic style, location, etc…   Photoshop is a powerful tool that allows you to fix any mistakes that were made during while taking the picture.  If there are any blemishes on the subject it’s fairly easy to remove them in photoshop.  Another thing you can do is remove things that are in the background that you don’t want in the background.  For example, In one of the photos above I had to manually remove the reflection in the window behind the subject.

Week 4

Closed:

Open:

Symmetrical:

Thirds:

For this week’s set of photographs I took pictures of places I travel to on a weekly basis.   First, my open shot is a photo of the stairs in Dreese Labs.  I have to climb three floors up this staircase every day to get to my software 1 class.  The next photo is a symmetrical shot of the hallway under Hitchcock.  I take a microeconomics class here twice a week, also many STEM Scholars events are held in the basement here.  My thirds shot is a picture of construction underneath Hitchcock.  This photo is here because there always seems to be some form of construction going on on campus, and it usually finds a way to impede my travel.   Finally, the closed photo is a shot of a rubber duck that sits on my desk everyday.

Week 3 Assignment

Under/Over-

Temperature Change –

Other Cool Looking Photos:

Missing Winter-

Evil Tower-

Goal:

When taking these shots my initial idea was to take photos that look striking or intimidating.  I attempt to make every shot more awesome looking by increasing settings such as contrast and dehaze.  When taking and editing photos I tend to lean toward these features, such as a high contrast look, so that the pictures appears visually striking.  Many of my photos are of common feature on campus that people pass everyday, such as the Orton hall tower and Tompson library, and to make them stand out more.  This way all of the pictures are something that people on campus would recognize, but have a different look to what they normally have.
