Module 3

Hello future and current college students!

Let’s talk about a tool that I am sure has had an impact on all of us whether it’s for school or social purposes; the INTERNET! We use it everyday, and I’m sure that most of us couldn’t live without it but there are things we need to keep in mind in regards to how we present ourselves digitally.

As a fourth year college student, I have realized that it is crucial to always present myself in a professional way even with my behavior online (netiquette).  I practice good rules of netiquette on social media by avoiding getting involved in heated arguments or exposing behavior that I know future employers would not like to see. It’s crucial to practice good rules of netiquette online because even when you think you “deleted” something, it could still be floating around the internet world else where.

Another point I’d like to focus on is utilizing the English skills that you spent years learning in all aspects. Of course, we focus on our grammar more when we are working on school assignments but you should always utilize your English skills.

I cringe when I scroll through my Facebook feed and see people writing statuses like shown:

What is she screaming at? Try to avoid capitalization unless you are trying to emphasize a key word or phrase. Also, for pete’s sake, proof read something before you post it!

I may not have the greatest grammar, I am also guilty of putting stuff on the internet that I wish I wouldn’t have. That’s why I am here to tell you think and proofread before you click. Whether it’s a tweet, a status, a paper, a google document or even a presentation, just remember to present yourself professionally and show that you are educated. We didn’t spend years of writing papers and practicing proper grammar for nothing!
