OSUCOM Clinical Skills Visit

I had the opportunity to visit and tour the Ohio State College of Medicine’s Clinical Skills Center. The Clinical Skills Center is a resource for medical students and professionals to hone and practice their skills with the ultimate goal of advancing patient care. As someone who hopes to enter into the medical field one day, touring this facility and seeing all of the tools and machines that are being used to introduce new techniques and new outcome assessments was very cool. Not only did we have the opportunity to see the facilities, but we also had some respiratory therapy students teach us about the process of intubation and how to intubate some airway trainer models.

Sophomore Year in Review

I am very thankful for all of the opportunities this program has given me. I have been able to meet so many people and get involved in so many activities that I never would have had access to without this program. I have learned a lot this year, and feel that I have grown a lot as both a student and as a person.

My classes these past two semesters have been throroughly challenging, but looking back now I am really proud of myself for making it through. I am really seeing the benefits of all those long nights spent studying in the library. This year has helped me to hone the learning and study skills that I started to develop freshman year. Participating in STEP also helped me to learn more about myself and the ways that I learn best. I know that these skills will not only help me with my future endeavors at Ohio State, but also with my life after graduation.

In addition to my classes, I have had numerous experiences that have had a large impact on me as a person. Firstly, studying abroad in Spain last summer pushed me to step outside of my comfort zone and taught me how to be a global citizen. That experience also introduced me to the people that are now some of my closest friends at Ohio State. In the fall and early spring I became more engaged in my sorority, and ran for the position of Vice President of Academic Development. This spring semester was my first term in this position, and it has already taught me so much and helped me to get more involved in the Ohio State and Greek community. My sorority also encouraged me to participate in BuckeyeThon for the first time. This was such a rewarding experience, and I can’t wait to participate again in BuckeyeThon 2019.

As my sophomore year comes to an end, I am reflecting on all of the amazing experiences and people that have impacted me so much this year. I am so excited to see what my next two years at Ohio State will bring!

Statement of Action

I have really enjoyed my two years as a part of Biological Sciences Scholars. Moving forward in my time at OSU, I am looking forward to completing my BS in Biology and completing my minors in Medical Humanities and Psychology. I am hoping to get even more involved at Ohio State by finding more clubs and causes that really inspire me. I hope to become more engaged with our greater Columbus community through service . Lastly, I plan to become more involved in my sorority and the Greek community.

Buckeyethon 2018

BuckeyeThon is a 24-hour dance marathon to spread awareness and raise funds for children with pediatric cancer at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. This was my first time participating in BuckeyeThon, and I found it to be such a rewarding and inspiring experience, and I can’t wait to participate again next year. This year my team raised over $10,000 for the kids, and the grand total for BuckeyeThon 2018 was over $1.6 million!

Scholars Event – the Wilds

artifact-3

On the trip to the Wilds with the Biological Sciences Scholars, we had the opportunity to see many exotic and endangered animals. Pictured above is a Greater One-Horned Asian Rhino resting in the grass in front of two other rhinos. The Wilds is first and foremost a conservation center, as they strive to protect endangered species such as the Grevy’s Zebra which is endangered due to hunting and habitat loss. We also got to see the veterinary hospital and learn about how the Wild’s unique layout allows for the vets and employees to have easy access to the animals and to treat and/or observe them as easily as possible. While I am not thinking about entering into the field of veterinary medicine, it was still very interesting to see such a groundbreaking facility.

Abstract – Welcome to my Honors & Scholars e-Portfolio

Hi! I’m Christina, a second year Biology major at the Ohio State University. I am also pursuing minors in Medical Humanities and Psychology.

This E-Portfolio contains and About Me page where I will describe myself and why I chose Biological Sciences as my Scholars Program. Also, I have included an Artifacts page to chronicle various pieces of work, both academic and otherwise, that I am proud of and that I feel represents my goals and plans for the future. The G.O.A.L.S page describes how the Scholars learning objectives apply to me, and how I will carry out them out. Lastly, this E-Portfolio contains a Year in Review post where I reflect on the past year as a whole, and a Career Page to act as a resume, list of experiences related to me career goals, and a list of any references I have.

Year in Review

It is strange to think that my first semester at The Ohio State University is already complete. It still feels as though it was only yesterday that I moved into my dorm and attended my first classes. Over the course of these past months I have accomplished so much both academically and socially.

In the beginning of this semester, I was very nervous for my classes. I was worried that my experiences in high school would not fully prepare me for the rigor of my college courses. This turned out to be partly true. After my first Chemistry exam, I discovered that I needed to change the way I studied for exams. So, I sat down with an Academic Coach at the Dennis Learning Center, and I have already noticed my study habits improve significantly, resulting in higher scores and less stress prior to my exams. I now feel prepared for my tougher course load next semester.

Aside from classes and academics, I was worried about the social aspects of my time here. I worried that I would have a difficult time making new friends and getting involved in something meaningful on campus. It turns out that I had nothing to worry about. The Student Involvement fair really helped me to see the myriad of opportunities for me to get involved. This semester I joined the student organization, Partnering Up for Pets. This has been such a fun experience, as the main part of this club is volunteering at the Franklin County Dog Shelter. I have really missed my own dog, and so being able to go and help my community while also spending time with some really cute dogs has been an amazing part of this semester. Through participating in this club and just meeting people in my classes, I have found it easy to make great friends.

The biggest lesson that I have learned thus far in my time here is how important time management is to success. I learned how vital it is to begin studying for my exams early on, and to not wait to do assignments until the night before they are due. Managing my time properly also allows me to do more enjoyable activities like going to workout or even just watching TV without having to worry about other things that I need to be doing.

I don’t think I could have asked for a better first semester of college. I have had an amazing experience at The Ohio State University thus far, and I can’t wait to begin my second semester. I have attained so many new skills that will help me throughout the rest of college and my life after graduation. I have also made lasting friendships. I am so fortunate to have had the opportunity to attend such an amazing school, and I can’t wait to see what the next three and a half years have in store for me.

G.O.A.L.S.

The Scholars learning objectives are: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement.

In the future, I can gain Global Awareness through a study abroad program. I am really interested in study abroad and am currently trying to find the right program for me. I am considering a May Term in Spain so I can learn more about the cultures I have been learning about in my Spanish courses. Also, I am trying to learn more about a Study Abroad program focusing on art in cities like New York, Paris, and Berlin, and another program about Greek History. Any one of these programs would help me to experience the diversity in the world around me.

Original Inquiry is typically associated with research. While I have participated in some short-term research in the past, I am really looking forward to learning more about the research process and the different projects happening on campus. I plan to get involved with on campus research in the near future. My current plan to find a research opportunity is to email some professors politely inquiring about their own research or the research of their peers. However, if I am unable to find on-campus research this year, I can always look into research opportunities at the universities back home.

I am actively seeking Academic Enrichment by taking courses that are not only rigorous, but also cover information that is new to me. As I am planning my schedule for next semester, I am using my General Education requirements to take classes that are truly interesting to me. For example, there is a Classics class that covers Greek Mythology that I am considering taking at some point. It is important to view courses not as burdensome, but as opportunities to expand my current knowledge and to learn more about the world around me.

In the past, I found it very easy to participate in Leadership Development. In high school, I was the president of a club and a captain on multiple varsity sports teams. However, college is much bigger, and I worry that it will be harder to establish myself as a leader among the thousands of other students. As I am only a Freshman, I am not currently trying to become a club officer, but that is something I plan to do in the future. I could look into the leadership positions of the clubs that I joined so far this semester and the leadership positions available in BioSci Scholars.

In the past, Service Engagement was a requirement that I needed to complete in order to graduate. Even though this is no longer the case, service should still be a part of my life. I can always use more service opportunities, but currently, I am a member of a club where we volunteer at the Franklin Animal Shelter. Also, in the summers, I volunteer for Motor City Blight Busters working to restore dilapidated Detroit neighborhoods. I can find more on-campus service opportunities on the Scholars Weekly emails, for example, Buckeyethon sounds like a fun way to give back.
