Year in Review

Since coming to OSU I have seen myself improve on many aspects of my life, whether it be in my social life or my academic one and everything in between. My perceived notions were that college was going to be much harder than high school, but while this is true, the extent of the difficulty was less then I thought. I was very worried about making friends in my dorm, and I realized that with the set-up HSS had, it made it very easy to make friends and my worry quickly resolved itself. My goals for my second year is to seek some kind of leadership position in something on campus, and I hop to keep many of the friends I made this year.

G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness:

Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc .

Original Inquiry:

Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.

Academic Enrichment: I interviewed my RA Ren, who is also going for a medical career.

Leadership Development:

Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.

Service Engagement: My 20 hours were a very mixed bag of activities, but the overview of the whole thing was that I was able to help many people and for once in my life, it was my decision to do so, and not just a someone telling me to do something. My most memorable moment was in the fall service event where I ended up kind-of being the leader of my group as I was one of the only ones in the group that had mulched before. This was so memorable because I never expected to be put in that situation, but when I was, it was like something clicked in my brain and I was put into full motion in this task that ended spectacularly.

WORK EXPERIENCE

——————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Upon entering college, I had one final goal in mind, and that was to continue on to medical school and eventually become some kind of doctor, the only thing I wasn’t at least kind of sure on was what I wanted my major to be. Now at the end of my first semester, I switched to what I could see as my major upon graduation, Neuroscience, with my back-up major being Biology. My plan to stay healthy while balancing my time with academic, extracurricular, and social commitments is that I am going to work out right after class each day and then run later in the day, and I will work my homework time and social time around this, because a heathy body helps with everything else. I will be trying this kind of lifestyle for the first time, so at this moment, I can only hope that I will be able to stick to it once in the bulk of the semester. Like many great people out there, I will not try to do everything myself, I will ask for help when it is needed and I will seek those who will impact my life in a positive way, because it is impossible for me to know everything. In my future years, and even my next semester, I hope to become more focused on building a life for myself, whether it is making myself do homework assignments way ahead of time, or its sticking to a program that I know will be, in the end, beneficial and worth it. I hope to be successful and I believe I have the capability to achieve this.

About Me

Head Shot

Jacob Romero is a first year form Akron, Ohio, majoring in most likely biology on a pre-med track. He plans on entering into the medical field but is currently unsure of the exact career. Jacob has four siblings, three brothers and a sister, and his two older brothers both attended The Ohio State University. He is also an identical twin, but his twin is attending school at Miami (of Ohio). Jacob is looking forward to getting involved on campus in such clubs as the LSA, rock climbing, ultimate frisbee, and intramural sports, but always keeping an eye out for new opportunities, especially in doing research.
