Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness–Throughout my time in the Advocates for Children and Education Services program, one of the major topics we have covered has been diversity.  From in class discussions on racism and social injustices to an Academic Event discussing the Black Lives Matter movement, I have been opened up to many different perspectives and societies.  I appreciate the opportunity that ACES has given me to learn more about how different ethnicities, cultures, and physical disabilities attack their everyday lives.  We also worked on a project where we discussed our own different characteristics and beliefs, and it truly opened all of us up to how blessed I am to be a fully-abled person and to live in a great country like the U.S.A.  With that being said, I now have an understanding for why people look to help those less fortunate, and I am also more willing to pursue ways that I myself can positively affect the world.

Leadership Development–Not only is your grade-point average important, but a big part to the college maturation is your ability to grow as a leader.  One of the ways I have been able to do this is through my involvement within the Board of Activities for Smith-Steeb Hall as a Floor Senator.  One of my responsibilities as a floor senator is to help vote on activities that will be run and also to help ration the funds we have been allotted.  In doing so, I assist in the always tricky task of making sure that the building’s funds are fairly and appropriately distributed.  This can be a very dicey situation sometimes, and it is also great practice for the future.  One constant in life is the requirement to be able to ration your funds, but also the ability to be able to work with others to make your atmosphere as positive as possible.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Waiting for Superman (ACES Pillars Film Project)–Waiting for Superman Presentation–This presentation was a part of my Scholars Seminar first semester of my First-Year in the Advocates for Children and Education Scholars Programs.  The objective of the project was to watch a documentary and present the Pillars that this documentary addressed.  The ACES Pillars are Positive Social Change, Advocacy, Community and Service.  This documentary was quite eye-opening, especially for someone who did not grow up in that type of environment.  The documentary, aptly named “Waiting for Superman”, takes us on the adventures of several young children and their families as they attempt to work the school system in low-income and impoverished communities.  I also appreciated the opportunities that this project presented me when it pertains to my ability to work in a group.  Something I have never experienced before is the struggle of working around so many unique schedules to accomplish a common goal.  Our group all had conflicts that presented themselves, and our ability to adapt and overcome despite those obstacles was a real learning experienced for me.  In conclusion, this project was a great thing for me to endure during the first semester, and was a good test to see how I can work with others and also how I can manage my time around a busy schedule.

Interview Project for Music 2252–Interview–Another project I am very proud of from my first semester of my Freshman Year is the Interview paper I did for my Music 2252 class.  For this paper, I was required to interview someone of my parent’s generation or older and inquire about their musical preferences.  This was a great learning experience for me.  I was very eager to learn about genres that I am not very informed about.  As it turned out, I learned more about the lifestyle of people in the past as opposed to the music.  I was already somewhat knowledgeable of the music, but the stories of family and community and love that I was told in this interview was truly eye-opening for me.  Hearing about how they lived their lives, while also being able to contrast that to my lifestyle choices was a great experience for me, and it opened me up to a more diverse and cultured view of society.  I am also proud of this paper because I feel like it is very well-written, while at the same time I was emotionally invested in it.

About Me

Hello, my name is Jaxson Romano, and as you can see above, I attend THE Ohio State University as a Business student.  My friend Brutus and I first met at my first tour of the campus Junior year, and ever since then I knew that this school was where I was born to be.  I attended Twinsburg High School in Twinsburg, Ohio.  I finished with a 4.1 G.P.A. and graduated with an Honors Degree.  I also managed to play Varsity football my Junior and Senior Years, and was awarded First Team All-Conference NOC team my senior year.  I am very proud of this accomplishment because it truly resembles my ability to manage my time and still excel in school and on the football field.  That is why I have no quarrels about setting high goals for myself.  I have spent the better part of 19 years watching my parents scratch and claw to put me and my brother in the best possible position, and I thank them every day for that.  However, I want better for myself and my family.  That is why every day after I thank them, I make a promise to myself that I will not be like them.  My professional goals are still fuzzy, since I am not 100% sure what my specialization within Business is.  However, I do know that my drive and determination and  perseverance will lead me wherever I want to go.  For instance, I was admitted into Fisher Direct, a program that puts me straight into the Fisher program without waiting the typical first year before entering.  I also entered with 28 credit hours from AP tests in high school, and both of these accomplishments have left me in a very good position to allow me to strive in my academics.  When I think of myself as a learner, I think of someone who never settles for less than what they think they deserve, and therefore I have a vast array of confidence in my abilities.  Also, I am someone who needs answers to things, and will push to find answers even when my instructors or peers cannot give them to me.  All of these attributes leave me believing that I can truly accomplish anything as long as I set my mind to it and follow the great work ethic my mother showed me you need to possess.
