My Final Blog Post :(

In all honesty, starting this class I was dreading have to do a weekly blog. Now as this class comes to an end I am upset! The blog really grew on me!

I have learned a lot about technology, online tools and online resources. I always knew about Google, Google Scholar and Yahoo but I never knew about Metasearch. Metasearch uses various engines when looking for a topic or keyword. I never used Google to make a calendar, spreadsheet

I have learned a lot about myself. When we had to take time management self-assessment I realized that I need to learn how to prioritize my daily tasks. I always thought I was doing a good job with that because I don’t get that much work to begin with. Since I get so little work I am usually able to finish that task before I am given another one. I realized that I hate procrastinating and that I always do my work 1 to 2 weeks before it’s due.

Module 5 was my favorite topic. I thought it was cool how student can bring up the power point slides and take notes right on them. I usually just print them out and write on them or write in my notebook and number what slide it is. I never knew that you could make flash cards with excel, I will defiantly be using that while I’m in my last semester of college, I graduate in December!! The thing that I need the most help with is taking notes. Most of the time I write down stuff that I think is important even though it isn’t. I thought module 5: lesson slide 7 was very helpful because the slides had a lot of great information. The Cornell Method was the major topic on this slide. The Cornell Method is when the student divides their paper or document online into sections so you can write down what the speaker says and so you can go back and write down your own thoughts. I never had to use a podcast for learning. I listen to podcasts for fun on my free time. I do like online learning videos because I can pause them to take notes, rewind if I thought I missed something and because I am a visual learner.

I can apply everything I have learned from this course to my life. I have one semester left and I can use the tools I have learned to help me with studying and taking notes. I am fast at typing so I can type my notes into Word and then eventually turn them into flashcards using Excel. Whenever I used any Microsoft product I would use it for the basic use like writing a paper, making a power point or keeping track of my weight in excel. Since I have taken this class I have learned that all of those products have a lot of other features. For instance, when you go onto Word, click on file, then click on new and there will be a search bar. You can type anything in and it will give you a pretty new page layout with colors, fonts, etc. The same thing happens in Excel and Power Point. If you are having trouble finding a new layout there is a suggested search bar. If I did not take this class, then I never would have been exploring on Word and Excel.

Second to Last Blog Post :'(

When I was in all of my English classes I wish I had the information that I learned in this module. I was always good at writing papers but I would get so stressed out when I had to do a research paper. It took me a while to get really good at writing.

Whenever I had a research paper I honestly wouldn’t know where to begin. I would always find sources that weren’t credible. On Module 6: Lesson Slide 4, it teaches you all about credibility. If there isn’t any contact info available, credentials of an author(s) or peer reviews then it probably is not a credible source. Another thing to look for when you are trying to see if your sources are credible is the quality of the information. This means if the article is up to date, consistent, well written, biased, etc.

Wikipedia may seem like it is a good source to use but it isn’t. Wiki is a ‘user-generated, editable, online encyclopedia’. It’s okay when you are looking for basic information but don’t use it as one of your key sources. On Module 6: Lesson Slide 6 there is a link called “7 Things You Should Know about Wikipedia”. The next slide has a list of websites that are very similar.

I always knew about Google and Yahoo but Metasearch is a new one for me. From what I understand, metasearch uses various engines when looking for a topic or keyword.

Educational Video and Thoughts!

This is a great video to watch if you are about to go off to college. When you start playing the video it shows you all of the bad habits that some college students have like going to bed at 3am, waking up 10 minutes before class and eating an unhealthy breakfast. After about two minutes it then goes to show you the good habits to have like going to bed early, waking up 45 minutes before the scheduled class and eating a healthy breakfast.

I am a visual person so I like learning from videos. Sometimes I have bad habits like going to bed late (usually if I cannot fall asleep by 11pm), sometimes not eating healthy and skipping out on exercise. I do have just as many good habits, too. I like being social on campus with some friends, I always do my homework and assignments early and I wake up about an hour before my scheduled class.

3rd Post

I feel like I am getting the hang of this!

Module 5 was my most favorite topic thus far. I thought it was cool how student can bring up the power point slides and take notes right on them. I usually just print them out and write on them or write in my notebook and number what slide it is. I never knew that you could make flash cards with excel, I will defiantly be using that while I’m in my last semester of college, I graduate in December!! The thing that I need the most help with is note taking. Most of the time I write down stuff that I think is important even though it isn’t. Module 5: Lesson Slide 7 was very helpful to me. The title is ‘Note Taking Approaches’. This slides had a lot of great information.

2nd Post!

Woo-hoo for my second post!!

Module 4 was extremely helpful to me. Reading in general was always a little hard because my mind can never focus on what I was trying to read. Unless I picked out the book or article and really loved it, reading was a lost cause. For me, reading online and out of a book are the same (I dislike them both equally). Module 4, Lesson: slide 4 was extremely helpful because it gave a lot of good pointers and tips to use when reading. The first tip ‘determine purpose for reading’ was my favorite because I always find myself reading and not knowing the purpose. My second favorite tip was ‘before moving on from a section, try to summarize it’. In my eyes, if you cannot summarize, teach or talk about what you just read than you need to re-read it until you get a firm grip and understanding. Creating key points are great too.

I have always struggled studying for test and quizzes because I am always nervous that I am studying the wrong thing. I loved when teachers gave you a mock test or quiz because then I knew what to study. Module 4, Lesson: slide 9 was great because it gave you 6 websites to use for creative studying. I was not a huge fan of the ‘mind map’, in all honesty I thought it was confusing. I loved how you can make flashcards on Google Spreadsheets.

1st Post

This is the first time I ever made and posted on a blog before! I have always loves fashion and makeup blogs so hopefully this get my creative juices flowing!

I know it may seem black and white when writing a professional email to an instructor or boss but I guess it isn’t. I thought it was funny when you opened the “How to Write an Academic Email” the first thing I saw was do not put ‘lol’ and ‘btw’.

I had no idea that ‘netiquette’ was a thing. If you do not have proper ‘netiquette’ when you are emailing a teacher or boss, thy may think less of you. When I am emailing a client(s), if they do not use the correct there, their or they’re I defiantly ask myself if they know the difference.

I really like to use a smily face when needed because sometimes what you’re saying may come off too strong. An emoticon is a great way to soften up your tone.

Other than having a written record of talking with your boss or instructor I think that emailing is a very professional way of communicating. Slide number 8 was very helpful. It states every professional way to write an email. Out of all the slides I thought that was the most helpful. Sometimes students or employees get nervous when writing an email and do not know what to put.
