G.O.A.L.S.

Sunday, October 28th 2018, my small group for Humanitarian Engineering Scholars and I went to Condado’s near the Short North area. I enjoyed getting on the COTA and spending time with my group. However, I didn’t enjoy the weather for it was extremely windy and rainy. Before this, I have never been to a Condado’s, and didn’t hear about its existence until I moved into my dorm. At Condado’s you can customize you’re own tacos and enjoy the classic restaurant set up. Next time, I may order different tacos, and afterwards maybe I may walk to different stores nearby. I would definitely go back to Condado’s and recommend it to a friends. From this experience, I learned that Columbus has many popular food options to offer for when you want to get off campus. It is very nice that the COTA bus fare is covered in our tuition, and that students are able to get comfortable living and navigating the city of Columbus. After our outing, I feel more comfortable taking the bus and not fearing exploration.

Sunday, November 18th 2018, a few friends from HES and I went to the AMC movie theater about a mile away from campus to watch the new movie Bohemian Rhapsody. I enjoyed watching Bohemian Rhapsody very much, and I loved that the movie theater was within walking distance from campus. A movie theater experience is one thing I miss from home, and I’m glad I was able to find a place where I can experience that while in college. Despite the cold wind, venturing off campus at night with my friends was exciting, and completely worth it. Before watching Bohemian Rhapsody, I thought that the closest movie theater to OSU was the AMC in Easton. I learned that there are places off campus that don’t require a bus ride to get to said location. If I were to do this again, I would watch a new movie I haven’t seen before, and plan more time for walking around the street. I intend on going back again sometime soon, especially if I need a break from studying, and would definitely recommend going to the AMC to a friend.

Cultural Communications Club: Cultural Communications Club is one of my favorite and most fulfilling involvements in my high school career. The Cultural Communications Club is an organization dedicated to raising ethnic awareness and increasing racial tolerance throughout the school and community by education and discussion. This is done by holding meetings about a specific country, culture, social issue, or current event. I joined as a member my freshmen year, and then became the advisor for the three years. This is important to be because I care immensely about racial equality. The bullying of minority ethnic groups in my hometown that I has witness have been my motivator for taking action and speaking up. In the future I hope to continue my activist work through service and education.

Swimming: Swimming competitively has taken up a big portion of my life. I’ve been swimming since Kindergarten and continued throughout high school. Swimming was a great stress reliever and forced me to manage my time. Although others would complain, I loved rising out of bed at 5:30am to get ready to lift weights with my teammates at 6:00am. In the afternoon, when the last bell rang, we’d get ready in the locker room, knowing minutes later we’d dive into the chilling water as the coaches push us to kick faster and control our breathing. All of this hard work leading to swim meets. I’d get a pit in my stomach before every event, but hearing my team mates cheering my name before I dart off the starting block never failed to give me the confidence boost I need. However, one of my favorite memories are bus rides to away meets, especially the bus ride to Sectionals where we stay in a hotel overnight before the last meet together as a team.

About Me

My name is Rachel Roman. I am a first year Computer Science major who grew up in Coshocton, Ohio (an hour and a half North East of Columbus), but currently lives in New Albany, Ohio (only twenty minutes away from campus). Although I study Computer Science, I am growing an interest in economics and environmental science. My goals are to use my knowledge to better my community, and to grow as a leader. Sports I played in high school include soccer, swimming, and tennis. I maintain my creative side through playing piano, being a member of art club, and preforming on stage at my local theater. Miscellaneous activities I’ve also done are National Honor Society, Science Olympiad, and Quiz Squad. However, my most fulfilling role was being the advisor of my school’s diversity club. Outside of school, I worked as a lifeguard and volunteered at my local museum. I grew from being a Coshocton Redskin into an Ohio State Buckeye, and, to make campus feel more like home, I became a member of the Club Tennis team and Backburner Sketch Comedy Club. You’ll find me on campus hitting around the tennis courts, preforming in sketches, or playing the piano in any common area with a piano present.
