G.O.A.L.S.

To me, the G.O.A.L.S of the honors and scholars community provide a foundation for success in my endeavors outside of school. By accomplishing each of the components I will be better preparing for my career as a graduate of the Ohio State University’s honors program. The first component, global awareness, is one that I plan to achieve by feeding my passion for traveling. I plan to take my love for the Spanish language and travel to a Spanish speaking country where I can further immerse myself in the language and the culture. I would also love to continue taking enough Spanish credits to earn a minor in Spanish. As a pre-med student I know that research is something that many medical schools are looking for on applications. However to me, research is not just about putting something down on an application to get me into medical school. I plan to become involved in research because I have a naturally curious mind. I always want to know how and why certain things work, and I love being able to solve a problem. Being surrounded by so many great researchers here at Ohio State University I hope to demonstrate the original inquiry component of G.O.A.L.S by becoming apart of a research team, hopefully working in neuroscience or psychological research. I hope to achieve the next component, academic enrichment, through taking higher level coursework in my major. One of the reasons I chose to major in neuroscience was because of a conversation I had with one of the older students in the major, who told me about some of the graduate level coursework that can be offered to undergraduates in the major. I love to challenge myself academically so I knew after hearing about the challenging coursework offered in the neuroscience major that it would be the perfect fit for me. Leadership Development is another important aspect of the honors and scholars G.O.A.L.S, and I plan to acquire leadership experience through the various clubs I am apart of. One of which I am very passionate about, the American Medical Women’s Association, which has various leadership roles. I also plan to try to acquire a leadership position within my major, as students in the major have the opportunity to be neuroscience ambassadors, acting as mentors to knew members of the major. I look up to all of the ambassadors I have met so far and would love to be in a position to help others as they have helped me. I have had similar leadership experiences in the past during high school, being a peer mentor and the Vice President of NHS, so I already know that I love to be in a position to help others and I can handle the stresses that may come with the position. The last but in my opinion, one of the most important aspects of G.O.A.L.S is service. Having been an active member in NHS through high school I have found that I am very passionate about being able to help others. So it has not taken me long to find service opportunities on campus, one of which being through the club I joined, American Medical Women’s Association. Through this club I have started volunteering at the YWCA a few minutes away off of campus. I help by working with both the children and the parents there on various crafts. With each experience at the YWCA I am reminded of how much I love being committed to volunteering as it opens my eyes to things I never really thought of before. Seeing how just a simple craft can brighten up the lives of the families brings me so much joy and reminds me to appreciate the smallest things in life. I plan to continue volunteering at the YWCA throughout the next four years as well as finding additional places where I could be of help to those in need. Each of the G.O.A.L.S is meaningful to me in their own unique ways, and I look forward to finding new ways throughout the next four years to broaden my experiences in each of them.
