Career Aspirations

As a first-year student at The Ohio State University, I had the opportunity to serve as a Legislative Page at the Ohio House of Representatives. I assisted in drafting policy memorandums and accommodations. Throughout the academic year, my policy papers improved, and I developed a profound understanding of the complexities of addressing policy concerns for residents in Ohio. I identified that I would benefit from an academic internship program to develop further the skills I learned at the House of Representatives.

Therefore, upon completing my first year, I was a participant in the 2019 Public Policy and Economic Internship Program, an 8-week extensive program sponsored by The Funds for American Studies in Washington, DC. My internship at the American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) exposed me to an organization that works to hold colleges and universities accountable for academic excellence. ACTA allowed me to work with a cohort of six peers to collaborate on university catalogs and data reviews for the 2019 “What Will They Learn” publication. The research I conducted helped families interested in college assess the educational value of pursuing education at four-year public and private institutions. In addition, the publication evaluated the quality of teaching and how equipped students are based on interdisciplinary exposure for career opportunities.

During the 2020 and 2021 summers I gained experience as a financial analyst, I engaged in meetings with market executives, legal counsel, and community relations managers, contributing to courageous conversations which led to increased diversity initiatives within the company. I worked on cross-functional projects to find solutions to retain clients, enhance the financial planning experience, and address the wealth gap for marginalized communities. Simultaneously, the reality of racial injustices and urban disparities were painted vividly by social unrest in the media. As I saw the significance of law within the private sector, this internship experience was pivotal in confirming my goal of furthering my education in law school.

Before starting my first year in law school, I was selected to intern in Washington, DC, with the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. Throughout my 10-week internship experience, I look forward to advancing positive outcomes in marginalized communities while also developing a keen understanding of corporate social responsibility. I am certain I will benefit from the expansive network in my pursuit to find long-term solutions to restore corporate-community partnerships.
