Ophthalmology Shadowing

During the 2020 Spring semester, I had the opportunity to shadow an ophthalmologist out of ReVision Lasik and Cataract Surgery. I spent a few hours in the operating room watching cataract surgeries and an emergency surgery in which sutures were placed in the eye. I was able to see the other end of the optical field and understand what happens when patients are referred to an ophthalmologist for cataract-removal surgery. I was able to see pre-operative care and since I have had experience as an optical technician, I have seen patients follow up with their optometrist for post-operative care. When I become an optometrist, I will be able to tell my patients what to expect and how the surgery will go as a result of my shadowing experience at ReVision.

Optical Technician

Since June 2019, I have been working as an optical technician at Vision Professionals, a private optometry practice out of Worthington Hills, New Albany, Sunbury, and Delaware. I have spent most of my time working in the Worthington Hills and New Albany locations where I have learned how to pre-test patients, identify warning signs of various eye diseases, order contact lenses, etc. This is great experience for my future career as an optometrist. By learning each of these skills, I have gained knowledge about different diseases and I have gained ample patient experience that has prepared me for clinical rotations.

Career

At Ohio State, I am involved in pre-optometry club, a club organized to give pre-optometry students resources for success in this pre-health major. Pre-optometry club meets once every two weeks to discuss matters important to students in this specialty. These meetings consist of tours of the optometry school at Ohio State, presentations from optometry schools such as Southern College of Optometry, and training with programs such as RealEyes to provide service opportunities. Additionally, we are also taught about research with professors, internships and jobs in optometry practices.
On October 9th, 2018, RealEyes, a program dedicated to teaching youth about visual health and safety, presented to the pre-optometry club about the different presentations that they give to students ages kindergarten through middle school. As an individual with a pre-optometry specialty, this presentation was very important to furthering my connections in optometry and providing access to a service opportunity in a field in which I am passionate. RealEyes has programs based on different age levels: kindergarten, elementary school, and middle school aged students, with an intent on creating a plan for high school students. At the training, we were given presentations for each grade level and were given resources and tips about how to handle working with these students. Some aspects of training even taught me more about optometry and furthered my knowledge of basic optometry subjects. After training, we were given the chance to sign up for presentations in local school districts and gave our contact information to RealEyes to begin the process of setting up presentations in classrooms around Ohio. This opportunity is fantastic for resumes, applications for optometry school, and experience in the optometry field.
