Service Engagement

The Biological Sciences Scholars program has given me the opportunity to volunteer for a multitude of different organizations. I assisted with the Hot Chocolate Run two years in a row, provided dinner for the children at the Huckleberry House, and interacted with the residents at Wesley Glen Retirement Community. I am currently a volunteer for DASH animal rescue in which I help care for animals who are looking for a home. I have also applied for 4 Paws for Ability in which I will be able to train service dogs.

Leadership Development

During my sophomore year, I became an Office Assistant in my residence hall, which allowed me to provide for the students and ensure their safety and well being. I am also a member of the pre-optometry club and hope to become part of the leadership board during the upcoming year. Finally, I applied to become a puppy trainer for 4 Paws for Ability where I would raise and train service dogs.

Academic Enrichment

During my high school years, I took multiple college-level courses. As a result, I am able to graduate a year early. I have been taking classes even in the summer semesters to ensure that I can graduate a year early and enter optometry school a year early. I have taken close to the maximum credit hours every semester to further ensure my success at Ohio State.

Original Inquiry

I am currently employed as an optical technician at Vision Professionals. Recently, we had the opportunity to become part of a clinical trial involving contact lenses. I worked to receive two certifications that would allow me to take part in the study. To see the certifications, please see the artifacts tab.

Vision Statement

My junior year will be my last year in undergrad at The Ohio State University. To finish out my time at Ohio State, I want to become more involved in the community. I want to continue volunteering through the Biological Sciences Scholars program and DASH animal rescue, as well as become more involved in additional volunteer organizations. I will continue to work as an optical technician at Vision Professionals and devote my time to trying to become more educated on the visual system. Soon, I will be taking the Optometry Admissions Test, which means I will be applying to Ohio State College of Optometry in the coming months. This year, I will focus on making myself the perfect candidate for optometry school so I can pursue my dreams of becoming an optometrist. I hope to excel academically as well as socially as I make new connections and friendships during my remaining time at Ohio State.

Sophomore Year: A Year in Review

My second year at Ohio State was a great one. I started the year off becoming an Office Assistant through the Office of Student Life. I moved into my dorm building with the other Office Assistants a few weeks early and made friends with everyone on the staff. From this position, I gained leadership experience and the ability to work as a team to keep the residence hall safe and secure. During my time as an Office Assistant, I sorted mail and organized packages, ensured the safety of the building, and even put out a fire in the lobby.

Academically, the fall semester of my sophomore year was a little rough. I took organic chemistry for the first time and even though I passed the class, I had trouble getting a good grasp of the subject matter. I also took physics for the first time and learned that physics is a challenging subject for me. Through these classes were difficult, they helped me learn how I study best.

During Thanksgiving break, I traveled to California for the first time and brought Ohio’s cold weather with me. I went back during winter break and it was beautiful! I spent this break traveling across the country, visiting different landmarks and states that I had never visited before. It was a great experience and allowed me to get a feeling for the world outside of Ohio. This experience pushed me to want to travel more, something I am hopefully able to do more in the upcoming years.

The second semester began as a great one. I was taking a vision science class that I was very excited about and I took biochemistry which I absolutely loved. I was looking forward to finishing out the semester with my friends when COVID-19 hit and canceled in-person classes. When I found out that classes were virtual, I was in Times Square in New York City, a hot spot for the virus. I was scared and worried about how this would change the semester. I loved the hands-on experiences that I was getting in my classes and I wasn’t ready to give up living in a dorm with all of my friends. Virtual learning was an adjustment, but I was able to keep myself focused on my studies and finish the semester strong.

Though this year was cut short, I wouldn’t have traded it for anything. If next year is even a fraction as great as this year was, I will be satisfied. My junior year will be my last year in undergrad at Ohio State and I plan to make the best of it before I enter optometry school!

Global Awareness

During my time in optometry school, I hope to be involved with programs such as Student Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity, or SVOSH. This program allows optometry students to travel to low income and underprivileged areas to provide free eye exams in an attempt to reduce refractive error across the planet. This program will allow me to travel to various regions of the world and help with vision care. Not only will I be able to practice optometry in various parts of the world, but I will be able to learn about different cultures and become involved in different communities around the world.

Ophthalmology Shadowing

During the 2020 Spring semester, I had the opportunity to shadow an ophthalmologist out of ReVision Lasik and Cataract Surgery. I spent a few hours in the operating room watching cataract surgeries and an emergency surgery in which sutures were placed in the eye. I was able to see the other end of the optical field and understand what happens when patients are referred to an ophthalmologist for cataract-removal surgery. I was able to see pre-operative care and since I have had experience as an optical technician, I have seen patients follow up with their optometrist for post-operative care. When I become an optometrist, I will be able to tell my patients what to expect and how the surgery will go as a result of my shadowing experience at ReVision.
