Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness is  extremely important to me. I currently have several study abroad programs that I am interested in participating in. I am already going through the application process to travel to England during Maymester of 2016 to learn about the history of the British Invasion of music. Also, as a Spanish minor, a lot of my coursework revolves around the Latin and Spanish history, culture, and ideology. Without traveling, I am able to learn the Spanish language and culture from professors that have significant experience with Spanish and Latin american cultures; the Spanish class I am enrolled in now is even taught by a professor that was born and raised in Chile.

Original inquiry is and will continue to be a significant part of my time here and beyond Ohio State. I am extremely interested in zoology based research. I currently would like to research the conservation or behavioral aspect of zoology especially. Within my major, much of my coursework involves laboratory experiments, which will prepare me for future endeavors in scientific research. Next semester, I will be interning at the Center of Science and Industry here in Columbus as an Animal Specialist. One of the aspects of this internship is creating zoological based research projects and expanding on current zoological research, which will be an enormous opportunity for original inquiry.

Academic enrichment has always been a priority in my life and will continue to be. As mentioned earlier, I am interested in interactive learning, such as study abroad and research, which has always proven to be enriching to my academics throughout my life. I also intend to continue to enroll in challenging courses that study topics that may be out of my comfort zone. I will not be enrolling in upper-level course work just to meet a requirement; I will do it to challenge and intrigue me as a scholar and a citizen. Tough and unfamiliar course work will require me to be engaged and attentive in my education, which will be the most fulfilling.

Developing my leadership was a part of my Ohio State experience before I had even moved in. My first experience as an enrolled student was attending the week-long First-Year Leadership Collaborative in early August. This experience connected me to student leaders, OSU faculty, and prominent people within the Columbus community, and it also developed my leadership skills immensely. I was also a welcome leader for move-in day here, and I plan to become a welcome leader coordinator next year. In the future, I am also interested in becoming a tour guide, a peer leader, or a peer mentor.

I have already begun to engage in service here in Columbus. The internship at COSI that I mentioned earlier is a volunteer position. There, I will not only be volunteering my time to the animals, but also to educating the Columbus community on zoological and environmental topics. I also hope to volunteer at the Ohio Wildlife Center and possibly the Butternut Farm Wildcat Santuary in Columbus in the next couple off years. I am also very interested in traveling with Buck-I-Serve, which would combine both the Global Awareness and the Service aspects of my GOALS.

Career
