G – Global Awareness

Biromantic AsexualI am biromantic – bisexual and asexual – so I care a lot about the LGBT community. I am currently in an LGBT group on Groupme in order to connect with others in the community and to learn more about each other’s experiences. It has been a good way for me to talk to people who are similar to me even while we are in the middle of this pandemic. I plan on being in Pride on campus at some point during college as well so that I can further my involvement. At the moment their meetings have been at the same time as my athletic band practices, so I have been unable to attend thus far, but I want to be a part of that group in the future.

O – Original Inquiry

I have not yet done too much in this category, but that does not mean I won’t in the future. When it gets further into my college career, I want to be able to work with a top researcher on campus on a project so that I can get some hands on experience. I am not completely sure what I would like to research, but I do know that I am leaning towards something relating to chemistry. I would also like to learn a lot more about how to do proper, well done research so that I can understand the process better and be able to conduct my own research in a manageable way when it comes time to do so.

A – Academic Enrichment

Amazon.com: Black Treble Clef Glossy Wooden Wall Decoration: Everything ElseI am currently following the first year classes to take for most engineering courses, and for the second semester I will be scheduling my classes in a way that will allow me to apply for both the chemical and aerospace engineering programs. I am likely going to stick with chemical engineering, but I would like to have the option for aerospace open too because that area of engineering fascinates me just as much as chemical engineering does. I am also minoring in music because music is a big part of who I am. In high school, I figured out who I was through band and those around me that I hung out with everyday. A few of my GE classes are going to be chosen in the next semesters in a way that I hope will fill some of my GE credits in the engineering program while also fitting into the classes that I need for my minor. I am currently in athletic band and university band, but I will be taking some music theory courses and music history courses as well.

L – Leadership Development

Since I am a first year and just getting into some of the groups and activities that there are on campus, I have not yet been able to become a leader in the groups that I have joined. However, I would love to be a section leader or equivalent in the athletic band once I become an upperclassman because I know how being in such roles will develop my leadership qualities. I was section leader of the clarinet section in my high school marching band for two years, so I already have some experience there. I would like to further that experience by doing similar roles in college. I would also like to be a mentor for freshmen in the next few years so that I can help others figure out what they’re doing just like my mentors have helped me. One thing I have been considering also doing but am still very unsure about is becoming an RA in the dorms. I am a little nervous because I have never done anything like that before, but I think it would be a huge opportunity for me to gain some new leadership skills that I could apply to the rest of my life.

S – Service Engagement

Due to my busy schedule with classes and band, as well as the hours I work on the weekends, I have not done much service yet. I am very upset by this because I helped my community a lot in middle school and high school, especially once I got new opportunities to volunteer once I got into National Honors Society my junior year, but I have just not found too much time where I could do a lot of stuff in the community. However, I have been doing my best to donate items when the donation boxes are in the dorm buildings. I donated a game for the toys and games collection that is being held in Drackett Tower. I also have some items at home that I am bringing next week to donate for the personal hygiene collection that is currently going on. In the future, I would like to get more involved in tutoring in certain subjects such as science, history, and English. I would also like to volunteer with helping the environment more and keeping our cities clean.

Good Citizen Award

At the end of my senior year of high school in 2020, I won the Good Citizen Award from Daughters of the American Revolution. This was a complete surprise to me since I had no idea that one of my teachers had nominated me. I was very happy to receive this award since it shows how hard I work towards being good to those around me and being a responsible person. I do not currently have a photo of the small medal they gave me for receiving this award, but I have included some photos from the award video my school created to congratulate students who won awards that year.

Marching in the Canal Winchester High School Marching Band 2016-2019

I spent four years playing the clarinet in my high school’s marching band. In 2018 and 2019, I was the section leader, which taught me how to better be a leader and gave me a lot more responsibility with teaching other students how to march and memorize their music. I even had a short solo in the 2018 competition show. It was a wonderful experience that made me learn how to better manage my time since I had to do schoolwork on top of the hours worth of band practices. Marching band really helped me grow as a person and figure out who I wanted to be. (In the video, I am the clarinet on the 40 yard line in the front of the field and at the end of the row at the 3:54 time mark!)

About Me

My name is Bailey Rodoski, and I am a first year at The Ohio State University. I am from Canal Winchester, Ohio where I went to the local high school for all four years. I was in the marching band where I played the clarinet, and I even played a short solo during one of our competition shows. During high school, I got three short stories/poems published in a teen literature book called Flip the Page by Thurber House. I was accepted into the National Honors Society and was chosen as an alternative for Buckeye Girls State my junior year of high school. During my senior year, I received the Good Citizen Award from Daughters of the American Revolution and graduated as salutatorian. I care a lot about my academics, and I hope to keep up my academic goals in college.

I am in the engineering program at The Ohio State University. I am hoping to pursue a career in chemical engineering, so that is what I am planning to major in. College is a major step for me when it comes to reaching the goals I have for myself. I want to be able to do well for myself in the future and make life for myself and my family easier. I am also minoring in music because creating and playing music is a huge passion of mine. I play the clarinet in both the Athletic Band and the University Band here at OSU. In future semesters, I plan on taking some music theory classes and music history courses to better my understanding of how music is made as well as how it has influenced people around the world.

I have no job experience when it comes to engineering, but I plan to do internships and co-ops in order to get the experience that I need. I currently work in retail at Cracker Barrel, and the people skills that I am learning there are going to help in my future career by making it easier for me to talk to people and handle tougher situations. In my career, I want to help make the world a better and more sufficient place by taking the skills I will develop in the engineering program to come up with new ways to make a difference.

Finally, I am very passionate when it comes to my community and my identity. As part of the LGBTQ+ community, I have made it my goal to support others when they are also struggling with their own sexuality and gender. I want to be there for others as somebody they can talk to and be open about themselves with. I have joined LGBT groups on campus to help get myself more involved in the community. I also care about helping those around me in my community, and I have done some volunteering in the past. I was a volunteer at Pickerington Summer Playground for seven years, where I helped camp counselors with their groups of young children as they came in for day camp. I have also done a lot of volunteering with the National Honors Society in high school, doing activities such as helping in a daycare for Church X, being a cabin leader for the fifth grade Heartland trip, and mentoring students in the Canal Winchester middle school band.

I am using this E-portfolio to help develop myself as a person and further my own career goals. I hope to be able to make new connections with people and present the diverse amount of work that I will be completing in the future.
