Homework 12 – The Secret of Drawing 3 “All in the Mind” – March 24, 2021
In the secret of drawing video, I was able to learn a lot, not only about patterns and some key artists, but also about art in general. Sol LeWitt offered a very different but intriguing approach to pattern, and one that I may want to incorporate in a sketch or project. She used pattern in a way of which she filled the space with lines drawn by a ruler to create a pattern and a very minimalistic mood. When learning about Sarah Simblet, I learned a useful tip for drawing the human body, which is to first only draw the lines that are necessary and essential to the body. I also learned that in modern art teachings, it is less common to actually have the body in front of the students as they learn to draw it, but Simblet liked to stick to more pre-modern ways, as well as keep the students very occupied within her classroom, which I thought would be a cool class to be in. Later in the video, I was intrigued by the detail and abstract ness of the work of Andre Masson, although his work was much different from something I would intend to create. He heavily used patterns within his work, and many different lines and small images to create these patterns, as well as left some detail within the patterns he created. One of my favorite pieces of his, was the chairs with humanistic legs, rather than traditional chair legs, and the set up of the chairs. After watching this video, I am left with many great ideas for our project, and would like to incorporate ideas of LeWitt and Masson in my own approach.

Homework 11 – Reflection to Modules 4 and 5 – March 22, 2021
In Modules 4 and 5 I think we were able to use what we have learned up to this point to create open ended projects. In some cases it was difficult to come up with something, but with the help of the exercises it became much easier to narrow down my ideas. I feel like my work fulfilled the criteria we were given, and I enjoyed the opportunity to have the freedom of what we were creating. Within this body of work, my strengths were in the abstract ness, as well as adding a bit of realistic touch to the pieces, for example project 7 and 8. As far as improvement, I feel like I could have done more on project 7, and now looking at it, I feel like it could have used a little bit more detail and maybe more space should have been filled with something other than the black charcoal. I think I struggled with it a little bit more because it was our first open-ended project, and I didn’t want to mess it up or not go along the train of thought, but now going forward I can be aware of making sure it is fuller. Overall, I enjoyed these two modules, and look forward to our next modules.

Homework 10 – Final draft of GE assignment writing component, and first draft of drawing component (please view in GE assignment tab). – March 14, 2021

Homework 9 – Sketchbook prompt check (posted in sketchbook tab) – March 3, 2021

Homework 8 – Reflection on Module 3 – March 3, 2021
I believe that my work fulfills the criteria’s we are given for each assignment, especially the time we were asked to spend on it. Although I spent a lot of time on them, I think I enjoyed it and it was nice to have time set aside to draw and put effort into it. Additionally, I think my projects showed perspective and depth, which was the key component of this module. I found it interesting as I reflected upon this that my exercises for this module did not turn out very well, but my projects did to an extent. I think doing the exercises provides us with a space to make mistakes and learn without ruining our projects, so I greatly appreciate them. The one area I feel somewhat challenged upon is shading in perspective, as it is a hard concept for me to grasp, not only making it look good but perspectively accurate. In project 5 I think the struggles came upon having darker objects in the further areas but knowing that they needed to be lighter, as they were in the distance and should technically appear as so in my shading as well as size. Overall, I think module 3 was one of my favorite so far, and I have learned a lot from it, including my abilities and some of my challenges in art.

Homework 7 – GE Assignment Writing Component (rough draft) – February 19, 2021
For this assignment, we were to select the artist we will be doing our GE assignment on, and I chose Tracey Emin. Additionally, we were to do some research about our selected artist, and I learned many interesting things about her, such as she was the influence behind the “Stuckism” movement.

Homework 6 – Prospective Article and YouTube Videos – February 12, 2021
For this assignment we were prompted to read an article and watch YouTube videos to learn about perspective drawings, as well as come up with 7 interesting facts we learned, so below I will share mine!
– Angular perspective has two vanishing points
– Parallel perspective has one vanishing point, in the center of the piece and the horizon level
– Perspectives can add a dramatic effect to drawings, such as making a greater contrast between foreground and background
– As perspective drawings become more complex, there is more room for error – so use caution
– Urban landscape drawing is more concrete than natural/ nature scapes
– Staircases can be drawn as rectangular prisms – and also be drawn in the parallel or angular perspective
– Grids can be used to make a more accurate representation of the interior space being drawn

Homework 5 – GE Assignment Research – February 5, 2021
For this assignment, we were prompted to select our favorite 7 artists from the GE Assignment list, so below I will share mine, as well as choose our top 3 artists and write a little bit about them, which will also be below.

Top 7 artists:
– Tracy Emin, Emile Nolde, Jenny Seville, Van Gough, Vija Celmins, Amy Sherald, Anni Albers
Top 3 artists:
– Tracy Emin – Emin has very different art from your ideal artists. She uses emotion and human bodies to uniquely share her stories. In reading about her I also learned that she uses many mediums, and does not just stick to one type of art or another, which I think is very cool, as many artists do not sculpt in the same nature that they draw. If I were to use her as inspiration for the GE drawing, I think there are many different ways I could create a piece related to hers but in my own way.
– Emile Nolde – Nolde is a German painter, and was popular in the early 20th century. He is best known for use of color, as well as one of the first to explore oil paintings with color. Some of HIST pieces that stood out to me were “Large Poppies”, “Summer Clouds”, and “Marsh Bridge”. If I were to use his inspiration for the GE assignment I would see myself being inspired by “Large Poppies” and creating something very whimsical yet realistic looking.
– Jenny Saville – Saville is a British painter from the United Kingdom. I was intrigued to learn that’s one of her art is currently on display at the Modern Art Oxford, and that her incredible work is still being made and displayed. One of her pieces that really stood out to me, was “Second Nature”. This piece was very abstract but very realistic as it had the face of a child almost perfectly painted, making it look as if it was two paintings in one.

Homework 4 – Sketchbook Prompt Check – posted in sketchbook tab – February 3, 2021

Homework 3 – Value, Reading, Bullet Points, and Drawing – January 29, 2021
For this assignment we watched a video and were to share what we learned, so below will be the tips I learned, and below that will be my drawing inspired by artist Paule Vezelay.

– Values that are next to each other on the scale will have lighter contrast and values further apart will have a deeper contrast
– Areas with greater contrast will grab the eye
– Plan the values of which you plan to use before drawing
– Values can play into the mood of the drawing
– Fuller value ranges can help create 3-d looking objects

Homework 2 – The Secret of Drawing 1 (The Line of Inquiry) – January 17, 2021
For this assignment, we watched a documentary on youtube and were to generate a response, below are my thoughts after watching the video!
” I found this video to be very interesting and informative in many different aspects. I quickly thought of all of the things that begin as a drawing and are brought to life in our day to day lives. Beginning with Francis Wells, I learned several different ways in which art is used in our world. Historically it was used to study anatomy and document findings, such as teeth, the pineal gland, and other various body parts. Wells’ work inspired me to consider incorporating some of his ideas and or parts of the human body into some kind of abstract work later in the semester. The next artist that stood out to me was John Adams Audubon, for his commitment to detail. Personally, I enjoy drawing in great detail but with his works, I learned the importance of it and how altering additional detail can be to a piece of art and the meaning portrayed. For one of my projects, I would like to add much detail and detail in a way that adds to the meaning of the work, inspired by Audubon. John Constable had a very different and interesting feature different from the others. He incorporated much emotion and realism into his drawings. One of his drawings shown that stuck out to me was one of the tree limbs that formed a face and showed that emotions change like the wind. I thought he offered a very different perspective on art and the ways in which it can share messages. During this semester, I would like to try to include ideas and inspirations with the artists within this video with the addition of my own spin on it. In light of Constable, I would like to add a sense of emotion into one of my drawings.”

Homework 1 – Create OSU Blog – January 17, 2021
Welcome to my blog, I hope you are able to navigate it easily, and I will typically be uploading each weeks’ content on Sundays!
