G.O.A.L.S.

I plan on fulfilling all five of the honors and scholars G.O.A.L.S. in the following ways:

Global Awareness
I will cultivate and develop my appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences in two ways.
I plan to study abroad during May of 2021, following my sophomore year here at Ohio State. I will be using my time abroad to complete a few of my General Education requirements, and therefore will have a wide variety of countries to choose from when deciding where to study.
In addition to this, I also plan on studying a foreign language. In the past, I have studied American Sign Language and deaf culture. While I want to continue learning about ASL, I would like to add another language to my repertoire. I am not certain what this language will be, but I am certain that of the many options at Ohio State, I will find one I am interested in

Original Inquiry
I will work to gain an understanding of the research process by actively scouting out research opportunities in the Physics field. I plan to develop personal relationships with my professors and inquire about their research experience. After completing the appropriate pre-requisites, as an upperclassmen. I am going to apply, and hopefully participate in the Summer Undergraduate Research Program, S.U.R.P., for physics or astrophysics.

Academic Enrichment
I plan to pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences, by taking honors level classes for both my major and for my general education requirements. I am committed to creating an environment for myself that will be academically challenging. While I am used to taking challenging courses in the STEM fields, I will develop new skills, and hopefully become a more well rounded student as I navigate a more rigorous classes that I do not naturally excel at.

Leadership Development
I plan on developing my leadership skills primarily through the musical groups I am in, or are planning to be involved in. I have found in the past that musical talent represents hard work and dedication to your craft, something all leaders should have. I believe that the skills I will learn through music will be applicable in almost any field of study/work I decide to go into. While I am completing a minor in music, I know that each ensemble I participate in will teach me something new. Whether it is creating my own path through improvisations in jazz, or attention to detail in the classical studies, music will shape me into a better leader.

Service Engagement
I will commit to service to the community. Both the local community, and a broader community. I am planning to participate in “Feed the Funnel” a program that many Ohio State students are involved in. Students and faculty will be gathering to pack lunches for those in need in the Columbus area. I am almost certain that this event will deeper my understanding of hunger in the United States. WE are often told that hunger is a problem that third world countries face, and rarely think that our friends and neighbors may to be struggling to put food on the table. I am hopeful that the people I meet will offer other connections to future service opportunities.
I would also like to use some of my time at ohio state to work on a personal passion of mine. I have always had a deep concern for animals and the environment, and I hope, possibly even during my time studying abroad, to work with an organization that is also passionate about wildlife conservation, a zero waste lifestyle, and other environmentally conscious issues. I have yet to find an organization, but I am certain that during my time at Ohio State, I will find an organization, or service trip to join.
