Global Awareness

Students will cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences.

The world is such a big place but knowing more about the nooks and crannies can make it feel smaller. The Ohio State University has something for everyone who wants to explore the world. The study abroad opportunities at Ohio State are plentiful and inviting. Unfortunately, I do not think I will be able to fit such an adventure into my schedule. Fortunately, at Ohio State you do not have to leave the country to be exposed to other cultures. One way I will blend Global Awareness and Academic Enrichment are to take classes that will broaden my horizons and make the world feel a little smaller.

Original Inquiry

Honors & Scholars students will understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community.

As part of my path towards medical school I plan to participate in research. One of the advantages of going to such a large and innovative university is that there are many opportunities to participate in research. I hope to participate in research that has to do with genetics, cell development, or embryonic development.

Academic Enrichment

Honors & Scholars students will pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.

I started as a biology major and just recently changed to molecular genetics. My hope is that in molecular genetics I will be able to take more classes of interest. My goal is to an obstetrician gynecologist and I believe that either major would serve me well but a molecular genetics major will be an even better fit.

When I was choosing GEs in my survey class I tried to pick classes that would help me prepare for the MCAT in the areas that my major would not. I also tried to choose courses that would be interesting so that when I am feeling bogged down by two or three upper level courses I can relax but still be testing my limits.

Leadership Development

Honors & Scholars students will develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and that prepares them for their future roles in society.

At such a large university I am going to be honest when I say that I have not wanted to look for a leadership position. I feel like there are so many other people who are better than me here. I have been taking small steps to get to where I feel comfortable. Right now I think the best way to utilize my leadership skills is to be a team player. I can hopefully inspire other people who are feeling intimidated to take the first step and just join a group or two.

The group I joined was the Ohio State Novice Crew team. I joined five weeks after everyone else and I felt like I was so behind. The other girls were very nice and supportive to me while I was trying to catch up. There were a few girls who joined even later than me so I decided to be there for me the way other people had been there for me. I felt it was my duty especially since I knew what if felt like to be the newbie.

Service Engagement

Honors & Scholars students will commit to service to the community.

I come from a small town and doing service work in Columbus is very daunting. There are more people, more area, basically just more everything. I think in my service I will start small and work on Ohio State’s campus until I get more comfortable. I really enjoy volunteering with animals and the environment. Those are probably the two areas I will volunteer in the most.
