Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

G.O.A.L.S. statement:

Global Awareness-

For me, global awareness is connecting with and understanding the vast amount of diverse cultures within the world.  It entails the cultivation of recognizing different social and cultural tendencies, and using them to expand one’s knowledge and experience.  OSU provides such a diverse campus compared to many other institutions, which provides the prime conditions for global awareness enrichment.  My plan to achieve global awareness during my time at OSU is to try out at least one or two cultural organizations or clubs, and to enroll in at least one course (besides the GE required course) that focuses on the studies of a different culture.  I have already attended an APIDA meeting (Asian Pacific Islander Desi American), which talks about the challenges faced by different cultures in America, and how we can seek to overcome them.  It was not for me, but I will continue to seek out a club or organization that I feel can better improve my global awareness.

Original Inquiry-

Original inquiry does not just require research and elaborate productions in my opinion.  It involves critical, active thinking while in and out of classes.  That means asking intricate questions, engaging in the classroom, and initiating sophisticated conversation with peers and faculty.  Original inquiry should teach one how to think critically, and to always examine what is put in front of them with care.  For me, I am currently considering research opportunities in the near future, and perhaps participate in the honors research thesis to aid my original inquiry.  I also plan to take high-level courses (honors level, and hopefully graduate level by my junior/senior year) , which will teach me how to effectively manage my time while still putting my best efforts forward in order to expand upon my ability to think at a level.

Academic Enrichment-

Academic enrichment for me entails enrolling in difficult coursework, but also engaging with faculty and peers in scholarly discussion.  This means asking for opportunities  for research or internships, talking about complex concepts (from coursework or outside of it), and more.  I will continue to enroll in rigorous courses during my time at OSU, and I hope to engage in these important conversations with faculty and peers over the next 4 years.  Similar to original inquiry, I will also still consider doing research.

Leadership Development-

Leadership development can be applied to almost every aspect of one’s engagement.  This means asking questions in the classroom, offering suggestions in a group discussion or project, giving moral support to others in sports, and participating and actively engaging in extracurriculars.  I plan to join at least one club that offers these kinds of opportunities, such as USG.  My difficult curriculum will help me to ask more questions and be more inquisitive about the world.  I also aim to participate in at least one recreational sport per year (probably volleyball and soccer) and give support to my friends and teammates during the seasons.

Service Engagement-

The obvious answer for service engagement is volunteering, but it extends beyond that.  It involves taking care of the environment when possible and not just convenient, getting an internship, being a kind and welcoming person in general,  and on top of that volunteering with organizations of good causes.  I feel that this is something I have struggled with in my past, but I plan to make this one of my strongest aspects over the next four years.  I plan to get involved with at least one organization, and volunteer with them on a regular basis.  I will also continue to seek out new people to meet, treat them with respect and care, and reach out to my peers who feel they are in need of physical or mental assistance.  In my four years, I hope to obtain at least two internships to enrich myself on the different effects that businesses and companies have on the community around me.
