Columbus Adventure

My HES group decided to get lunch at Melt Bar and Grilled in the Short North. The entire menu is different kinds of melts and everyone in the group ordered a different sandwich. The portions were large and the melts were very delicious. Overall, it was a great bonding experience and we all got to know each other a bit more. While we were in the Short North, we also made a point to look at the stores and other food places that were around the area for future adventures. There is more to the Short North than I realized, and personally, I would like to make it a habit to go to the Short North. I would definitely recommend Melt to my friends and I would enjoy going back at a later date.

Columbus To-do List

Overall Experience

I learned that there is much more to Columbus than I previously thought. There is an array of unique food places and coffee shops. Not to mention that the different areas in Columbus each have their own unique charm. My favorite experience was going to German Village. When I went there, I had the most time to explore. In the process, I also found a great new coffee shop that offers a variety of different roasts and brewing methods. I want to explore more of the local food and coffee shops. I would also like to attend a concert here and go to some of the festivals. At some point in my college career, I would also like to participate in the Columbus half-marathon and marathon. I would recommend going with your friends because they always make the experience more enjoyable. Additionally, I would recommend going somewhere that would be a new experience, like for me getting Thai food for the first time. It is always worthwhile to try new things with people that you enjoy being around.

Artifact 1 and 2

Artifact 1

My artifact from high school is Band. I was actively involved in Band from the 5th grade through high school and by senior year I was very involved in pep, marching and concert band. Band was an opportunity for me to grow as a person and I took on more leadership roles such as  percussion section leader. Band was also a place for me to make friends and many of the friends that I still have from high school are from band. I have many fond high school memories rooted in band such as our Florida trip to Disney World, cedar point, concerts and competitions. Band was an opportunity for me to have fun with friends and grow as a musician and as a person.

Artifact 2

Harry Potter is my second artifact. All of my roommates are avid Harry Potter fans and our realization of this is one of the reasons that we were all able to connect. Our initial Harry Potter connection has helped all of us get close and now all of us are really good friends. My college experience would be very different if I didn’t have my roommates as my best friends. Harry Potter also contributes to my college experience because every Sunday night, my roommates and I have a watch party in our room. It’s a great way for all of us to bond with a few of the other people on our floor who routinely join us.

Columbus To-Do List

Columbus To-Do List

From the options off the Columbus to-do list, I chose the neighborhood list. I am very much looking forward to seeing more of the areas of Columbus, particularly German Village. I am also very excited to explore the coffee shops and other unique shops of the different neighborhoods. From this experiment, I hope to learn more about the areas of Columbus. I also want to learn more about how to navigate through the city using public transportation. From this to-do list, I want to explore and find spots that I would want to visit again and also find quiet places off campus that would be nice to study.

For my first neighborhood, I visited German Village.

German Village

I visited German Village with Stevie Lohbeck and Anna Cotterman who are also humanitarian engineers. We took the bus to German Village and walked from the bus stop to the Book Loft. We probably spent an hour at looking at books deciding what to get. I spent most of my time in the science section and ended up buying two books. I love books and would definitely go back again. After Book Loft, we went next door to Stauff’s coffee roasters. I was very excited that they had a large selection of coffee grounds that I could purchase because they had roasts that aren’t available at Kroger or other grocery stores. I also liked Stauff’s because there were a lot of tables set up and it was quiet enough that it would be a good place to study. Before we left German Village we took the time to stop and look at the architecture and admired the buildings. One of the most memorable moments was when we stopped at Kroger on the way back and I dropped my phone on the concrete by the bus stop and shattered it. Overall, it was a fun trip and I would definitely take the time to go back to German Village.

Downtown

For the second neighborhood. My roommates and I visited the downtown area and visited COSI. We were able to get in for free because it was the Friday of parents weekend. When we first got there, our entourage went to the Ocean exhibit. While we were there, we participated in many of the water activities, including spending about 25 minutes trying to make a dam out of sand. As we left the Ocean exhibit, the 3 of us all fit into the submarine which was certainly not made for 3 full size people. After that exhibit, we walked around and looked at some of the smaller fun exhibits in the hallways. At one point we looked at an optical illusion for 10 minutes. Finally, we ended our night by going to the mezzanine and riding the unicycle. Overall, it was a fun experience. I have been there many times but it was enjoyable to go with my friends.

Short North- Nida’s Thai on High

I went with a fairly large group to Nida’s Thai on High to celebrate one of the member’s birthday. We took the bus there and it took about twenty minutes to get there. I had never been to a Thai place so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. My meal was very good. I had fried fish battered Thai style with vegetables and rice all in sweet and sour sauce. It was very good food and not too spicy which was good for me. After dinner, we all went to Simply rolled ice cream for dessert. By this time, I was freezing and was too cold for ice cream, but everyone else enjoyed their food. By the time we were finished, it was just after 10, so the bus schedule was starting to run less frequently. As a result, we ended up standing outside the bus stop for twenty minutes in freezing weather. Despite the cold, the trip was worth attending. It was worthwhile to try new food and explore the Short North.

About Me

I am a college freshman majoring in mechanical engineering and am a humanitarian engineering scholar. I hope to either add physics as a double major or a minor. While at Ohio State, I hope to spend time doing undergraduate research while learning more about possible academic interests. In high school I was involved in 13 extracurriculars that covered music, sports, service, religion, and academia. I am originally from Kenton Ohio, a smallish rural town northwest of Columbus. I am excited for all the opportunities at Ohio State as well as all the opportunities in Columbus and I hope that the next four years will be full of adventures.

My Clifton strengths are ideation, restorative, achiever, learner, and command.

Ideation – I relate well to the ideation strength because I am always full of ideas. I also like to seek out new and different experiences which matches with the ideation strength.

Restorative – I often seek challenging problems and I’m invigorated when I see myself forming solutions.

Achiever – I am always setting new goals for myself and pushing myself to go farther in just about everything. I also get very restless if I relax for too long. There always needs to be something to work towards.

Learner – I am always looking to learn more information and I often read about interesting topics outside of class such as ancient civilizations, and quantum mechanics. I also feel attracted to tough and challenging problems which closely matches with the learner strength.

Command – I don’t often take charge, but if I think I have a better vision or if the current leadership is lacking I don’t mind taking charge. I have the initiative and ideas to lead and people who really know me will often look towards me to lead them.
