Being a PhD candidate often feels like managing a full-time job with five different titles. You’re a researcher, a teacher, a student, a writer—and still a human being navigating bills, relationships, job searches, your health, and maybe even family life. And at the center of it all sits your dissertation, quietly but persistently demanding your time, energy, and focus.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed as a PhD candidate, know this—you’re far from alone. As the fall semester gains momentum, I’ve found myself stretched thin, juggling competing demands while trying to carve out meaningful time for my research. It’s a constant push and pull, and while I haven’t perfected the balancing act, I’ve discovered a few strategies that help me stay grounded, focused, and moving forward:
- Focus on building systems and habits that support consistent progress. Organize & block out time for each of your roles (teaching, research, etc.) ensuring that you have a dedicated time to work on your dissertation. Treat it like a standing appointment with yourself.
- Start each week by identifying your non-negotiables. What must you absolutely get done this week? Prioritize those tasks and use tools like Pomodoro sessions or digital planners to stay focused and on track.
- Boundaries are essential. You don’t have to say yes to every request or opportunity. Practice saying no without guilt, and if it helps, enlist a friend or mentor who can remind you that protecting your time is an act of self-respect.
- Give yourself grace – life happens, and some weeks will be harder than others. Be kind to yourself and surround yourself with people who celebrate your wins and stand beside you during the tough stretches.
