Alumni Interview

I chose to interview Emma Dalan. She graduated from OSU with a major in microbiology, volunteered in multiple labs, and was involved in clubs such as the running club. In her time at OSU, Emma also tried club such as the rowing team and the rugby team. From my correspondence with her, I learned of different ways to get involved with activities on campus in order to grow my interests. I also learned the importance of being involved. Even if I end up disliking the activity or club I get involved in, it helps me have a more clear idea of what I want to do in the future.  Through this interview I also learned skills to help me succeed in job interviews, such as rehearsing questions beforehand and learning about the company. I can apply the information learned in this interview by taking advantage of the resources and opportunities on campus in order to have a more fulfilling experience in college and to further build my resume. To find more opportunities, I was recommended to reach out to my professors so that I better understand the material and have an easier time getting a letter of recommendation if I ever need one.

To Do List pt. 1

This semester I have elected to explore the locations posted on the “coffee and tea” list. I’m looking forward to trying some of the various coffeehouses around Columbus and to be able to explore city. I am also looking forward to finding quiet places off of campus to relax at or spend time with friends. I hope to be able to connect with friends within the scholars group by spending time with them as we go around to these establishments. So far this semester I have visited Kafe Kerouac, a coffee house and bar on High Street near campus. It was introduced to me last year by a friend on campus and has since become one of my favorite places in Columbus to visit. I’ve gone multiple times this semester, both to study and to enjoy the live, local music the establishment hosts on weekend nights. The cafe has a very laid back atmosphere, with vinyl records and a plethora of various books for sale. All of their specials are literature themed, named for different authors. The Jack Kerouac, a hazelnut and mint latte, is my personal favorite. Some of the alcoholic drinks are also literature themed, such as the “Dante’s inferno”, which is chocolate liquor, amaretto, espresso, and coffee. The restroom is painted with chalkboard paint, so the walls are covered in a variety of quotes, drawings, and scribbles. I would definitely recommend the coffee house to a friend, as I have already taken multiple of my friends there.

About Me

’m Sterling, from Van Wert, Ohio. I also frequently go by my middle name (Ed/Eddie). Van Wert is a small rural town near Lima with nothing much to do other than walking around cornfields, woods, and Walmart. I’m a zoology major currently, but I’m not entirely sure if I’m going to change it or stick with it. I know that I definitely want to get some degree in a biological science, or at least one relating to nature. As far as a career goal goes, I’ve developed a lot of interests but have no clue which one to pursue. Working at one of the national parks, preferably one in a more mountainous area, has been a strong interest of mine. Working for programs that reintroduce endangered species to ecosystems is also a career I’ve considered entering. I’m interested in trying to get an internship at the Columbus zoo to help me focus on a more specific career path.

Since I was a kid I’ve loved being outdoors and being involved with cleaning the environment. When I was younger I was in 4-H and would participate in events where we would all drive down different roads cleaning up the litter in the ditches. I’ve also always loved outdoor adventure activities; however I’ve never gotten to go on any overnight camping trips. I’ve been hiking and kayaking on road trips with friends and enjoyed it. Back home, my friends and I also would go out and explore down creeks or different woods around where we lived.
