Second Year in Review

Unfortunately, sophomore year did not end in an ideal way. Due to Covid-19, I had to finish the remainder of sophomore year online. This transition was not an easy one. Taking classes online was very difficult for me in my setting at home. I also faced challenges with missing my friends and trying to get over that some of my college experience had been lost.

Besides this, my sophomore year went much more smoothly for me academically. I switched my major second semester freshman year, so Autumn semester I got to take my first courses in my major. I was very pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed these courses. I was scared that I still had not discovered the career path for me, but I can safely say that I have! It has been amazing how much more driven I am in my school work now that I am taking courses that are extremely interesting and that I am passionate about.

This year I continued volunteering for OSU Pen Pals and as an active member as Alpha Gamma Delta. I also continued working in Residence Life as an Office Assistant, though I made a transition from Houston House to the Residence on Tenth. I also began working in a lab as a research assistant. I decided to work in an EEOB lab to have some variety and I have always wanted to work in a lab that utilizes model organisms. I did general lab work. For the project I weighed crickets and did general maintenance. I enjoyed my time in the lab and hope to continue this next semester.

All in all, I am very fortunate for the time that I did get to spend on campus this year and am excited to see what the next two years has in store for me!

Go Bucks!

Abstract

My e-portfolio is a display of my time at The Ohio State University. I have grown both academically and personally since I have started my career at Ohio State.

In this e-portfolio, I have displayed some of my achievements under the “Artifacts” tab.

In the GOALS section, one can view my most important morals.

The career section outlines my future career plans and aspirations, as well as discusses some of the things that I have done to advance my own career. In addition, you can find an updated resume.

The Year in Review section shows the reflection of my time here at Ohio State and what I have learned.

Career

This semester I evaluated my major of molecular genetics and the career that I had planned in dentistry and decided that I no longer wanted to pursue that path. I changed my major to speech and hearing sciences and have decided to pursue a career in speech-language pathology. I want to attend graduate school after I finish my undergraduate degree and become a speech-language pathologist.

Applying my Knowledge of Phonetics

Fall semester 2019 I took Speech and Hearing 3320, or Phonetics. Phonetics is the study and classification of speech sounds. This was one of the harder classes I have taken in my time at Ohio State. In the class we learned and studied the entire phonetic alphabet. This was extremely difficult as I had to learn a new symbol for every sound in the English language. It took many hours of studying and practicing so that I could write fluently in IPA.

One project I did required transcribing a video clip of someone with an accent in IPA. This project was pretty challenging due to the accent of the speaker. I transcribed a clip of Hannah Brown, the former Bachelorette. She is from Alabama and has a very heavy Southern accent. This project helped to improve my confidence in using IPA.

This is very important because as a future Speech Language Pathologist, the use of the Phonetic Alphabet is integral in your work.

Freshman Year Second Semester in Review

This semester I learned a lot about myself. At the beginning of the semester, I had a crisis about my major. I was not interested in the classes I had taken the previous semester and I was not excited about the classes that I would be taking in the future. I knew that I wanted to change my major, but I had no idea what else I would want to do. I was stressed that I would get behind or that I was already there. I talked to an advisor in my sorority about her career as a speech-language pathologist. It sounded very interesting. I did more research and talked to one of my brother’s friends that is in a graduate SLP program. I met with the major advisor and decided to change my major to speech and hearing science. I really enjoyed my classes this semester. History of Art 2002 was my favorite class. Overall, it was a much better semester for me academically and was still a lot of fun.

One Scholars Event that I attended was the soccer game in August. This event was very fun for me and allowed for me to make new relationships with my peers.

About Me

Hi, my name is Haley Ries! I am from Hilliard, Ohio which is a suburb of Columbus. I am first year studying Molecular Genetics on a Pre-Dental track. I am a member of the biological sciences scholars and Pen Pals. I am also employed with Ohio State’s Residence Life as an Office Assistant

.

Artifacts

My artifact is a toothbrush. Ever since I was young I have always wanted to be a Dentist. Most people find that strange because they do not enjoy going to the dentist, but it was always my favorite place to go. I was always so fascinated with all of the tools and things that they had and used in the office. I enjoyed the personal relationships that I formed with my hygienists. A toothbrush reminds me of the aspirations that I had as a child and still do now.
