GOALS

Global awareness- I do not plan on studying abroad, but I am hoping to take advantage of the diversity at Ohio State in order to expand my knowledge of different cultures. I will have to fulfill a language requirement, and while I have not decided what language that will be, I am hoping to become fluent in that other language and learn a lot about that culture. I am considering Arabic and German primarily, but I have not ruled out any languages.

Original inquiry- This is probably the goal I am most excited for as an honors student. I am very interested in statistics, particularly sports statistics, and I was hoping to get involved in some sort of sports statistics research at Ohio State. However, if that opportunity does not present itself, I am also interested in crime statistics and I am sure there will be some research opportunities in that field. Unfortunately, I do not think that there will be much research in the actuarial science field, but I am hoping that will allow me to branch out a little bit.

Academic enrichment- To be completely honest, I do not know what I want to do after college. I know that probably sounds weird coming from an actuarial science major, but I do not know if becoming an actuary is my end goal. I am good with numbers and I like all of the major fields that come with actuarial science (math, statistics, computer science, and business), so I figured it would be a good major for me. I am hoping that these combinations of classes will broaden my career opportunities, and I plan on continuing to challenge myself in this field until I can narrow down my focus for post-college life.

Leadership development- At the moment, I am only involved in the Big Data Analytics Association, but I am hoping to join more clubs over the next couple of months. I am still trying to get acclimated to my classes and the homework, so I have put off joining clubs, but that is something in which I definitely plan to invest more time. Ideally, I’ll be able to pick a few extracurricular activities I am really interested in and apply for leadership roles.

Service engagement- Service was always really important to me throughout high school, and that is something I plan to continue in college. I am hoping to become a tutor and probably join a club dedicated to service in the future. There are countless opportunities at Ohio State to serve members of the community, and I am hoping I can find at least one that makes me passionate to serve.

About Me

Hey, my name is Jacob Riedl and I am currently a freshman in the honors program at Ohio State. I am an actuarial science major, hoping to pick up a second major in either statistics or computer science, and I live in Taylor Tower. I plan on joining the Big Data & Analytics Association as well as OSU Actuarial Club, but I am also a huge sports fan so you can catch me at the basketball and volleyball courts along with the football field.
