Personal Development

My recent involvement in e-sports with The Ohio State University has influenced my development in unexpected ways. First off, I have become more motivated to excel not only on my team but in school as well. Aside from it benefiting my e-sports career, the increase in motivation also has raised my grades and inspired me to work ahead on several assignments. Second, making the team and being a part of something on campus has made me happier as a person. I am more confident now, and my mood throughout the day has increased. Since I am happier now, I have become more proactive and hardworking on school work and my e-sports endeavors. Last, my development from joining the e-sports organization at The Ohio State University has broken me out of my shell. The first couple of weeks at college, I was not social at all with other students at the university. I had no friends at the end of September, but, after joining the team, I have finally made some friends of my teammates. Because I have finally made some friends, I have finally started to socialize more and acting more natural in my daily life. As I continue to invest more and more time and effort into this team, I hope for these developments to continue to grow and make me a better person. Not only is this venture a passion of mine, I have found it to be beneficial to my school life and continues to help me grow.

Artifact II

As of November 3rd, 2018, I have started programming my first game in my spare time with one of my friends. My friend came up with an extreme version of tic-tac-toe, and we decided to make a website and an online version of the game for others to enjoy. With me programming the game in Java and my friend converting that into JavaScript, we are working towards creating this weird and random game together.

Considering I am pursuing game design and development as a career, this artifact was a an obvious choice to highlight. Not only has it challenged me to use all of my current Java knowledge, but it’s making me apply those skills in new and innovative ways. In addition, pursuing this project will give me real-time experience with working with a team, and it will improve my communication skills in the scope of video game development.

Artifact I

On September 13th, 2018, I was allowed a starting position on Ohio State’s official Fortnite e-sports team. Now, I know that might make want some of you to roll your eyes, but there is good reason for including this in my e-portfolio. As of right now, the competitive scene for collegiate Fortnite is lackluster at best. There aren’t many quality leagues where colleges across the country can compete to be the best of the best. Therefore, my fellow teammates and I have decided to try and change that. We are going to attempt to start our own league for all colleges to participate in across the country. It may seem useless to an outsider, but this could make big changes for the collegiate scene, and we’re trying to make those changes.

This experience could possibly get my peers and I noticed by game companies like Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite. As a hopeful game designer, this could help me get connections with the company early in my college career. This whole experience portrays my passion for video games and my competitive spirit. I want to create a competitive environment for the collegiate pro scene for a game I love. In addition, I could be characterized as a go-getter for taking the initiative to create the league rather than waiting for someone else to do it. All-in-all, this experience will contribute to my development by familiarizing myself with the logistics and the leadership role of a large network of colleges. Therefore, I’m very excited for what’s to come in the future as I experience new things and meet new people along my journey.

About Me

I love video games. My name is Nick Rieder, and I plan on majoring in Computer Science with a specialization in Game Design. My goal is to graduate in four years with a Bachelor’s Degree and go on to create amazing video games at a big company. I am a hardworking and diligent student who will always put my best effort forward. I try to always keep a positive mindset and look on the bright side, so I can always provide a moral boost during dark times.

My passion for video games started at a young age, beginning when I would watch my dad play classic games for us while I ate dinner. Video games have been an integral part of my life ever since, and they’ve taken up the majority of my free time for as long as I could remember. They were always there to keep my mind off things that were stressing me out or making me depressed. Video games have introduced me to so many new friends and has created so many happy memories. Therefore, I want to create video games of my own to hopefully give those same experiences to others like me.
