Social Studies Methods Final Project

This three day, consecutive lesson plan is based off of the 6th grade standard:

S.S. 6.8. Modern cultural practices and products show the influence of tradition and diffusion, including the impact of major world religions (Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism).

The following lesson plans allow students to engage in the 5 major world religions, including their characteristics, beliefs, and diffusion. This knowledge will allow them to explore concepts of the impact religion has had on cultural practices in both the past and present.

Day 1:

This lesson plan introduces the major world religions utilizing mapping. Students will learn where the major world religions are predominantly located, their population size, and where they have expanded on a global scale. Students will learn about the characteristics and beliefs of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam incorporated through station work.

Day 2:

This lesson plan builds off of the first day with completion of the station activity exploring Buddhism and Islam, as well as a deeper look into the diffusion of each of the major 5 religions and their impacts on society. Day 3:

The final day utilizes the information learned from the first two days for students to complete a document based questionnaire (DBQ) that contains political cartoons and religion based excerpts. These documents support students in examining the essential question of “Does religion unify or divide societies?”
