Digital Composition of “Sway”
Physical Composition of “Sway”

Project Statement

For this project I had to create two compositions (one digital and one by hand) to express a word of my choice. I focused on the design principles of movement and rhythm to express the word “sway.” My goal for this project was to create a new shape that captures the audience’s attention while clearly displaying “sway.” With the physical composition, I wanted to focus on craft and execution in order to effectively communicate my ideas to the viewers. The outcome of my final project displays a series of cross shapes, circles, and squares in a flowing pattern.

Reflection

Through this project, I learned that simplicity and small compositions can effectively communicate larger ideas. The idea of simplicity was a struggle for me during the construction of my shape. I overthought my design many times and had to take a step back and realize that complexity does not always make a design better. Moving forward, I will use this new way of thinking to increase my efficiency and clarity to the viewers as well as cleaner craft.
