Senior Project: French Poetry Book

For my Senior Challenge Project, I decided to create and illustrate an original French Poetry Book. This project was completed during my senior year of high school. In creating the poetry book, I wrote the poems in English first, and then I translated them into French with my French teachers checking over my translations. Finally, I transferred the poems into a program called Blurb to format the book and illustrated the poems creatively and openly. I chose this specific artifact because it is a very personal work to my high school experience and therefore my experience as a learner. This is a worthy mention in my e-Portfolio because this challenged my abilities as a French student and person. The experiences I had writing and drafting the poems, translating them, and reflecting on whether or not they were to my satisfaction made me realize just how much I had grown in the last four years as a person but also as a student. This project showed me what I was capable of in terms of taking my love for the French language and intertwining a part of myself with it to enhance my experience as a learner and a creative soul. I learned how I handle big projects, time management, and ultimately if passion is lacking I struggle to commit fully to a project. I am grateful that I did not experience the latter with this specific project, however, going into the future I am aware of this and will try to only take on projects I am passionate about in order to be able to give my all.

Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates

I read Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates during my senior year of high school. This book discusses being black and what this means in the society that we live in and how to live with this fact. I selected this specific artifact because it enlightened me as to how I learn and how the lens through which I learn affects my learning and enhances it. After having read the book, my class and I were tasked with writing an essay about the book. I have linked the paper down below which is why I feel this is a noteworthy moment to include in my e-Portfolio because it showcases my ability to bring my experiences to my work. This is a significant essay to me because I really connected with the text in a way I never have before; I was able to really see just how my perspective is so inclusive of trying to understand others perspectives to make sense of my world. I learned that when I really connect with a text, I create something with detailed analysis intertwined with cohesiveness and creative conclusions.

About Me

Hello, my name is Gracin Richardson. I am from Cincinnati, Ohio, and I am currently studying Biology at The Ohio State University. Some fun facts about me include that I am a dog lover, a poetry writer, and a Netflix binger. I am also a very faithful person and am actively involved in my church and its outreach. In high school, I enjoyed the challenges that I received in my math and science courses which is why I chose my field of study in Biology. I hope to find my own path into research here at the university and probe and analyze questions that will draw me closer to the thrill of scientific inquiry. After graduation, I plan to attending medical school to become a pediatric surgeon or pediatrician. I have always loved children and wanted to make a difference in their lives rather it be medically or in any other capacity. I hope I can use this drive to help children in deprived neighborhoods and be actively involved in these areas to help develop the healthcare facilities available. I know The Ohio State University will present me with the opportunities to equip myself with the knowledge and skills I need have a successful and impactful career in my field.

Biological Sciences Outing to OSU Men’s Soccer Game

The OSU Men’s Soccer Team had their kickoff game against opponent Furman University. I attended the game with my roommates along with other Biological Science Students. The overall experience was very nice especially since it was my first week on campus. I enjoyed meeting new people, unwinding after my first week of classes, and just feeling as if the campus wasn’t as big as I thought. I am happy that I was able to attend and show my support for the Men’s Soccer Team. Go Bucks!

Semester in Review

My first semester at OSU was filled with many valuable lessons. First, I learned even more about discipline and the importance of having a schedule. As I began to find a routine, a schedule constructed itself in hopes of balancing my academics with a semblance of a social life. I learned that I do well completing assignments at the same time each week, and I also like to complete big assignments in one sitting as opposed to breaking it up. While I have not struggled to balance my social life with my academic obligations, I have realized that I don’t have to go nor do I need to go out very often which makes more times for my studies. All in all, my first semester has gone very well, and I have enjoyed getting to know campus and my roommates, meeting new people, and being a buckeye.

G.O.A.L.S.

  • Global Awareness: Global Awareness means immersing oneself in the another culture to further appreciation and understanding of another’s values, beliefs, and practices. I believe this provides a more rounded life experience and a great empathy for individuals and groups of people who have a different culture. I hope to experience this immersion through a potential French minor and a study abroad opportunity. Through the French minor, I will be able to get a more in-depth look into the French cultural and become more fluent in the language. Studying abroad will enhance my appreciation as I will be able to be apart of while also being an observer. I feel both of these immersions widen our individual experiences and allow more thoughts, ideas, and opinions to be more open and inclusive.
  • Service Engagement: Service Engagement means giving back through any means possible. I hope to incorporate this into my time at OSU by volunteering, participating in a regional service trip, and potentially gaining a leadership role in an organization to be able to plan events. I plan on volunteering at Werner Medical Center or a nursing home to gain more experience and interact with more people. Also, I would like to join a service club that does out of state outreach as well as area outreach in order to plant some roots in a club in which I can hopefully get very involved in for the future. I would like to cooperate this into my time at OSU because giving back is so fundamental to what I want to do with my career, so why not start to make the difference sooner.
