Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

  • Global Awareness: About a year ago, I participated in a service trip to Nicaragua where, along with 20 other students, I helped to build a learning center for underprivileged children. My Global Awareness Goal is to participate in another service trip to a spanish-speaking country.  With a minor in Spanish, I will be able to communicate with locals more fluently and by staying in the country for a longer period of time, I will have the opportunity to fully experience and embrace a completely new culture.  Education is so incredibly important to me and because of this, I want to help provide better educations to those who may not have had the opportunities that we have in the United States.
  • Original Inquiry:  My goal is to gain hands-on experience through political opportunities provided by the PSL scholars program and by OSU.  With the State House so close to campus, I am hoping to get an internship or job helping in the State House and eventually working more closely with government officials.  I also hope to further my political experiences through helping local politicians campaign both on and off campus.  Opportunities like this have been presented by the College Republicans organization and by PSL advisors.
  • Academic Enrichment:  While focusing on classes that focus mainly on my career path, a challenge that I have given myself is to take classes that do not necessarily pertain directly to my major or minors.  My minor in Spanish will allow me to learn about new cultures and hopefully to experience some as well even though it does not necessarily help my major. I am also hoping to take some environmental classes because helping the environment is something about which I am passionate.  Broadening my education to areas beyond those of my majors and minors will help me to become a more rounded and all together a better educated person in the future.
  • Leadership Development: In high school I was very involved in student government, something that I hope to continue throughout my time on campus.  I am planning to become a member of the Undergraduate Student Government.  During freshman move in this year I also participated in the OSU Welcoming Leadership program (OWL) where I helped others move in comfortably.  I hope to continue participation in this, and other leadership programs provided by OSU.
  • Service Engagement: I want to participate in a service abroad program while at OSU as aforementioned however, I also want to help the local community in other ways.  In high school I volunteered in Big Brothers Big Sisters which I hope to continue at OSU. I love spending time with children and giving them positive influences to look up to.   I also spent a lot of time volunteering at local shelters and soup kitchens in high school. After doing some research I hope to continue this volunteer work in Columbus as well.  Helping others is another passion of mine and I am excited to become more involved in this community.

About Me

My name is Sophie Rice-Williams and I am a first year undergraduate student at the Ohio State University.  I am majoring in Political Science on a pre-law tract with a double minor in Spanish and Psychology and I am a member of the Politics, Society, and Law scholars program.  My career goals include practicing criminal law or becoming a psychology consultant for children in the foster care system during their trials.  I am from a small town called Hatfield, Massachusetts but I have also lived in Texas, Illinois, and now Ohio.  In the past I have been extremely involved in student government within my high school, region, and state.  I was a delegate on the Massachusetts Association of Student Councils (MASC) state board my senior year of high school and held positions such as Regional President, Regional Vice President, and Regional Delegate throughout high school.  Student Government is where I discovered my passions for politics and law and I hope to pursue these passions while at OSU.
