Artist Statement: Serena Yoakum

The sculpture, In My Palm resembles how hands are made for creation. Without my hands, who am I? I owe them credit for all my artwork. Due to the intricate articulations they perform, I have caused them much pain. To make amends, I celebrate their hard work with a lovely glove. It is art that my hand can wear. This miniature landscape illustrates a portion of a forest, a place where fantastical things grow, because in my palm I have the power to grow as an artist.

Introverted is a wooden, domestic sculpture reserved to a limited audience. When switched on, its timid glow slowly changes color over time, selectively illuminating the environment within. In a bright setting, the colorful lights are barely visible. The insides seem plain and static. However, the ideal room to house the sculpture is a dark setting that will bring out its true beauty. Shapes are more fantastical when they are cloaked in ambiguity and softly lit. An overall comforting and homely feeling makes the sculpture belong inside a household, rather than in public. The piece itself feels most safe when it is less seen. Its colors shine when others are not around to wash them out in competition. It is modest, secretive, introverted.
