For Spring Break, I went on a service trip to Detroit with an organization called MoTown Mission. I heard about this opportunity through my campus church. This organization works with many of the local non-profits to help the community; whether it be helping them with household tasks, yard work, food and job stability, or community beautification.
Everyday, we went to a different non-profit. One of these was called Rippling Hope. I found this very impactful because it was led by one guy who offered many tools for home repair in poorer areas. However, instead of just doing the job and leaving, he was very invested in the people there and talked to them and offered them upkeep advice. Being able to help him for a day really paid off because then we could divide and conquer to get things done. Specifically, we painted a dilapidated hallway and helped clean debris out of yards, all while having conversations with the people and learning to respect the people we were serving.
Another nonprofit we visited was the local community garden. We planted tulips, trees and did some landscaping in the area to make it look nicer. This was impactful because in a few months when they grow, people may have a better day by looking at the flowers and growth that it happening in plants in the spring; a symbol of hope in an area that definitely needs it.
As for myself, I learned that there is more to life than my status as a student. I learned that I am capable of providing a huge impact to people and that doesn’t necessarily come from being in a classroom. I learned that maybe I sometimes need to take a step back and be appreciative of my education and many things I take for granted that the people and Detriot do not have. Lastly, I learned that I am able to step out of my comfort zone, and I am better at holding conversations than I give myself credit for.
I was impacted as a leader because I was able to think on my feet, and come up with ideas of how to not get paint on the floor, for example. I also could lead through my positive attitude that I saw myself gaining on the trip as I was helping others.
Because of service learning I am more aware of the help this world needs and I am hoping to structure my future for the good of others and not take as many things for granted as I do.
