Artifact 1

Last summer, I had the unfortunate experience of needing to have brain surgery due to a brain bleed caused by a cavernous malformation. I lost a lot of confidence in myself because of this and questioned if people saw me differently. However, instead of  giving up, I used this to my advantage and worked hard in school and cross country. I continuously pushed myself to show how setbacks don’t have to define you. My greatest accomplishment came out of this when I qualified to run in the state meet. I will never forget the moment I crossed the finish line in 19th place instead of 54th, which was what was predicted for me for the regional meet. This experience taught me how important self-discipline and perseverance are when you want to achieve a goal. Because I also had the opportunity to be the top runner for my school, I learned how to step out of my comfort zone and be a leader who encourages others to be the best that they can be.

About Me

Hello, my name is Andrea Reinstatler and I am a student at The Ohio State University where I am studying STEM. I say this generally because I haven’t quite figured out what I am going to do with my love for science and critical thinking. I’m constantly dissecting my interests because there are so many different careers I can see myself going into. My future may be unclear at the moment but there are certain professional goals I wish to pursue. One day I want to be a leader of some sort. Some background on why this is so important to me is because for the first 18 years of my life, I didn’t feel like much of a leader. I did most of my thinking inside my head because I was afraid my expressions wouldn’t be accepted. This started to change, however, last year when I had the opportunity to be on the executive board for the prayer and justice club and became the top runner and lacrosse captain for my all-girls high school in Cincinnati. They were small leadership positions, but they gave me the confidence to be a leader without the fear of disappointment. I also have a goal that in my career, I want to always keep learning. When I have an interest in a certain subject, I enjoy keeping up on current standards and theories surrounding it. This point goes hand in hand with my last goal which is to love what I do. An obvious, but important factor to always consider in life so that I can put meaning into every day. My journey right now is unknown, but when I do discover it, I’m going to give it my all.
