    • Title: “Exploring the Utility and Reliability of Complexity Codes for Physical Therapy Evaluations.”

    • Goal: Examine the reliability, utility, and value of evaluation complexity codes in rehabilitation.
      • Our new research study entitled Exploring the Utility and Reliability of Complexity Codes for Physical Therapy Evaluation has been awarded an OPTA Research Grant. Evaluation complexity codes went into practice nationally in 2017, but payors have been hesitant to adopt a tiered reimbursement system for different levels of patient complexity. A potential reason for this is the lack of understanding of the utility and value of these diagnosis codes. Therefore, the primary aims of this pilot study are to examine reliability and accuracy of PT evaluation complexity codes. We will use data from this project to inform a larger, multi-site project. Findings from this study will help minimize inconsistencies of evaluation code complexity determination and can lead to improvement in health care equity. In addition, findings may influence the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services to adopt a tiered reimbursement system so that PTs can be adequately compensated for addressing the complexity of a patient’s needs
