Year in Review

GOALS Reflection-

Global Awareness: I joined GlobeMed, a student organization that raises awareness of the social health inequities around the world and funds a secondary school education program in Rwanda, during my first year. Now, I serve on the executive board as campaigns coordinator and will maintain my position throughout my third year at OSU. Additionally, I am pursuing a minor in Spanish, as I really enjoy learning about the culture and background surrounding the language.

Original Inquiry: I work as a research assistant under Dr. Hannawi,  a critical care neurologist at the James Cancer Hospital/Wexner Medical Center. We are studying the effect of hypertension on cerebral small vessel disease, which causes dementia. I also am continuing my work in a neurosurgery lab under Dr. Vadivelu at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, exploring the neurological effects of Alagille syndrome in children. Research is a huge passion of mine and I am grateful that I get to continue pursuing my interests.

Academic Enrichment: OSU has allowed me countless opportunities to enrich myself academically. Whether it is through taking honors classes, such as Biology 1113H and 1114H, to a seminar in Behavioral Neuroscience (PSYCH 5898) to classes taught completely in Spanish, I have been able to learn so much through my challenging courses. As I plan to one day become a neurologist or neurosurgeon, the neuroscience major gives me so much variety in choosing the specific classes I want to take. I have loved each of my major level courses thus far and I know this will continue throughout the rest of my time at OSU.

Leadership Development: This past year, I founded a student organization at OSU named Snehalaya at The Ohio State University. The club is based off the Indian nonprofit that works to provide education, rehabilitation, and healthcare to the country’s most marginalized populations. At OSU, we host fundraisers to raise awareness and money for Snehalaya’s important causes. Also, I was recently inducted into Nu Rho Psi, a neuroscience national honorary, and was selected to serve as a neuroscience ambassador starting in Autumn 2019, due to my dedication to the major.

Service Engagement: I am a volunteer at the James in the Medical/Surgical Intensive Care Unit, served as a race volunteer at the Cincinnati Heart Mini Run, created blankets for cancer patients at the James, and volunteered at the Good Sam Hospital for my sixth year. I plan to continue pursuing all of these service activities in the future as I enjoy them greatly.

Artifacts

In my Biology 1113H class, I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Columbus Light the Night Walk, sponsored by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I was given the task of assembling and distributing lanterns to participants of the walk. The lanterns were given out according to color: red was for supporters, white was for survivors, and yellow was in the memory of a loved one. The experience allowed me to see a small snapshot of how many people are impacted by the various blood cancers. Volunteering at the walk gave me a new outlook on how people come together in times of struggle. I am happy that I had the chance to help out at this great event.

About Me

My name is Rashmi Rege, and I am a first-year undergraduate student from Cincinnati, Ohio. I graduated with honors from Ursuline Academy in May 2017. I am majoring in Neuroscience at Ohio State and plan to attend medical school.

I have joined various student organizations at OSU such as GlobeMed, the Arts & Sciences Student Council, and AEDelta. Through AEDelta, I applied for and have become a member of the Buckeye Tutor Team. The tutoring program consists of visits to Nationwide Children’s Hospital to help the kids keep up with schoolwork and serve as a friendly face in a scary hospital environment. I hope to find additional volunteer opportunities in the future.

I conducted research this summer in a neurosurgery lab at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and really enjoyed my time there. In the lab, I developed skills involving PCR, gel electrophoresis, and cryosectioning. I am currently looking for a similar lab on campus and hope to get involved soon.

In my free time, I love to walk my beagle, Claire, and play tennis. I am looking forward to my time at OSU!

G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: I am a member of GlobeMed, a student organization that strives to make others aware of the inequities in health and justice around the world. I also hope to go on a study abroad trip at some point in my time at OSU.

Original Inquiry: I am in the process of emailing researchers to see if they have any openings in their labs. I am very interested in research because of my experience in the summer.

Academic Enrichment: I will maintain a high GPA by staying focused on schoolwork and meeting with my TA/professor during office hours. At the same time, I will take honors courses that challenge me to think on a higher level.

Leadership Development: I am on the Arts and Sciences Student Council Marketing Committee. Through this position, I help spread the word about the council and encourage fellow Arts and Sciences students to attend the meetings. I am also a tutor on the Buckeye Tutor Team, where I help the kids keep up with schoolwork. I hope to be on the executive board of one of the student organizations that I am a part of and/or possibly create my own student organization in the future.

Service Engagement: I have volunteered at local hospitals in the past and plan on continuing to do so while in college. However, I would also like to expand my horizons regarding I volunteer, such as helping out at a food pantry, assisting individuals with developmental delays, etc.
