  • Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc.
  • Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.
  • Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.
  • Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.
  • Service Engagement: My first year service experience was good. I took advantage of the various volunteering opportunities provided through Health Science Scholars. I wasn’t involved in a consistent volunteering organization, so the opportunities provided through HSS were very helpful. Outside of HSS, I also volunteered in the Columbus Metropolitan Library, Whitehall Branch in the Homework Help Center during Winter and Spring Break.

About Me

Hello, my name is Ruth Regassa, and I’m a freshman in the Ohio State University. I’m majoring in Pharmaceutical Sciences on a pre-med track. I’m also part of the Health Science Scholars Program at the University, where I will be learning about various health professions, in addition to serving in my community, and gaining leadership skills. I hope to get exposed to research and volunteering opportunities through the Health Science Scholars. I’m an aspiring pediatrician who loves working with children.

Although I just started my freshman year, I’m looking to join various organizations that are geared towards service. Whether it is in my community or around the world, I would love to be a part of something that gives back to people.

Year in Review

Coming in as a freshman in August of 2018, I had very little knowledge of what I was getting into. For once, I underestimated the challenges I would face academically. Just a few days into the semester was when I realized that college was nothing like high school. I was troubled by the lack of structure in the classes like I was used to in high school. Although in high school I believed to be great at time management that didn’t hold true when put to the test in my first year. I had a hard time balancing my school, clubs, and social life. I also realized that I wasn’t very good at saying no to things, which is a very crucial thing to stay focused and succeed. In my first year I learned what it was like to fail, really fail. I also learned what it was like to not know what I wanted to do. All the plans that I had in high school for my college and career life crumbled in my first semester. From what I have written so far, you might think I had a horrible first year of college, but actually it was one of the best years I’ve ever had in my whole life. I met so many people, and developed friendships that I know will last beyond my college years. I’ve learned through experience that failure is not the end, but for me it became just the means to grow personally and academically. I’ve learned that academics is important, it doesn’t ultimately define who I am. So, in short my first year of college was great with a lot of lessons learned.
