Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: I plan to study abroad in the summer of 2017. I would like to teach English to French students in France. In preparation for this opportunity, I am taking intense French courses that help me gain a global perspective. We cover French culture and history, so I am learning more than the language. In other classes I am learning about inclusive teaching. Inclusive teaching means accepting each student, no matter where he or she is from and no matter what his or her native language is. I will be an advocate for every student in my classroom.

Service Engagement: During my first semester at OSU I have been volunteering during H2O Church community engagement Saturdays. The group of students goes to Scioto Community, a nursing home for elderly people recovering from surgeries and illnesses. I have enjoyed this service because I learn so much from the residents of Scioto every time I visit. They have great experiences to share with my peers and me. I plan to continue volunteering at Scioto and growing relationships with the residents.

School and Society Group Paper Assignment

This artifact is a group research paper that I have worked on with three other students in my School and Society class. We just finished this report today (December 2, 2015). It was assigned to give my classmates and me an opportunity to point out problems we see in the schools and research ways to fix the problems. My role in the group was to learn and write about the issue of disproportionate placement of English Language Learners in special education. Another role I had included organizing all of our annotated bibliographies thematically and alphabetically.

I selected this artifact because I feel that my group created a valuable piece that can be used for better understanding about how the teaching standard needs to change. I am proud of the in depth research and the hard work that my group members and I put into this project individually, as well as collectively. I enjoyed the teamwork we used to make a cohesive paper. This artifact represents my first research paper in college and my first group research paper. Overall, I feel the process went smoothly.

What surprised me about this artifact is that I was able to complete my parts of the project a whole day before it was due. I gained skills organizing resources and making in-text citations. I also learned about taking responsibility for my roles in the group and following through with deadlines.

Most importantly, I learned that working as a team can have many benefits: group mates can keep each other accountable, the work load can be divided, and everyone can learn from their group mates’ experiences.

Déjeuner du matin Essay

This artifact is a composition I wrote for French 2101.01 halfway through autumn 2015 semester. The essay was an opportunity for creative writing in French. I used the poem “Déjeuner du matin” as my inspiration, and I created a story behind the poem.

I selected this artifact because it represents my passion for the French culture and language. I enjoyed making this piece because I enjoy being creative. In addition, I learned about “Déjeuner du matin” in high school as well, so I have had plenty of experience with the poem to formulate an intricate background story.

I learned that I have the ability to write a long paper in French. I used to believe that I was only capable of writing short paragraphs. I gained skills including creative writing in French and thoughtful analysis of literature.

This artifact taught me to think more deeply about readings I do for school. It was challenging to meet the length requirements for the essay. I felt as if I said all I needed to say in two pages. I felt that writing more would cause me to begin rambling. I learned that I need to give myself more time on the next composition so that I can come up with more ideas and complete the paper to the best of my abilities.

About Me

IMG_0004 - Copy

I have lived in Centerville, Ohio since I was born 19 years ago. Centerville City Schools’ reputation includes high achievement in academics and sports. I participated in basketball from second grade until sophomore year of high school. I also enjoyed softball and soccer. During my time playing sports, I learned how to work with others and act as a teammate, as well as how to take responsibility for my own actions. I challenged myself in school by taking honors and advanced placement courses. I learned the importance of time management and asking for assistance when I needed better understanding. My favorite subjects include math, art, and French. A passion of mine is for community service. Through my church, I have been involved with a variety of mission projects. The most meaningful experience I gained in high school occurred during my senior year when I became a Sunday School preschool teacher. This opportunity helped me stay connected to the church and learn valuable skills about the responsibilities of a teacher. One of my short term goals includes deciding between Early Childhood Education and Middle Childhood Education. My long term goal includes making a difference in the lives of others by educating students and giving them bright futures.
