G.O.A.L.S.

Hello!

Today I would like to share my G.O.A.L.S.. The acronym stands for Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement.

For global awareness, my goal is to study abroad. Due to my major being Japanese, I am most interested in studying somewhere in Japan. Ideally, I would be able to study for a semester in a university in Japan so the full immersion will help me learn more of cultural differences, social context for speech patterns, and allow me to create lasting relationships with potential resources.

For original inquiry, I would like to conduct research on the affects of westernization on Japanese language and culture. It intrigued me how quickly westernization affected Japan, and I would like to learn of how Japanese culture affected the western world as well.

Regarding academic enrichment, I will be prepared for a career as a translator, interpreter, and for medical school. My goal is that, if I am unable to attend medical school, I enter the JET program, which is an exchange program with two aspects: teaching and business. I hope to do the teaching program in JET, which will allow me to teach students in Japan English.

As for leadership development, I intend on being as involved as I possibly can. I am in SHADES, an lgbtq+ group for students of color, and I am going to join the Japanese Conversation Club, Oshaberikai. I also hope to join BNRC (Bell-National Resource Center on the African American Male), and run for student government. I also would like to get involved with the OUAB, and take some leadership opportunities outside of Ohio State University.

Lastly, for service engagement, I would like to volunteer at Kaleidoscope Youth Center, a youth center for LGBTQ students between the ages of 13 and 20. I will continue to work with the Food Pantry, and I would like to volunteer with tutoring services as a Japanese tutor. Japanese is a difficult language, and there is a small demand for tutors for it, but there are none.

These are the G.O.A.L.S I have set for myself for the next 4-5 years of my undergraduate career. Hopefully, they will be realized, and I will continue to strive for success.
