GOALS: Academic Enrichment

I interviewed my good friend, Olivia Lutz, who has just been accepted into a post-bac program to receive a secondary education in Anatomy and Physiology at Case Western University within a gap year while she applies to medical schools. She graduated as a Neuroscience Major and completed the Pre-Medical Professional Track. This is almost identical to my career choices. Last year when I had interviewed her she was still in the midst of studying for and completing her MCAT. She gave me some great advice on study habits as well as whether or not to invest in tutoring programs for such tests. She also gave me recommendations on good classes that I can take in my major track to learn some essentials that will be tested on the MCAT. Olivia was also able to inform me on the importance of doing volunteering of both the clinical and non-clinical nature in order to show medical schools of your interest in the bettering humanity. She used to volunteer weekly at the Ronald McDonald house and also worked as a Patient Care Assistant at Wexner Medical Center. This year, she has notified me that she is looking into become a medical scribe so that she will be able to gain more clinical experience and be able to shadow a doctor. This interviewing process over the past two years has been very beneficial to me because it almost mirror my plan for the rest of my academic future as well as the beginning of my career.

Career

I definitely feel a lot better off about both my personal life and my academic life after my first semester here at OSU. Not only do I have a strong network of advisors, faculty, and upperclassman to guide me but I also have some very good friends that I have formed an instant and everlasting bond with. The HSS program and the Neuroscience program have helped me tremendously in solidifying my career path and my alternative career path. I have stuck with my ambitions to become an OB/GYN but my advisor has helped me expand on my interest of social justice issues and my career interests by helping me plan out a Women’s Studies Minor that would help me incorporate my passion for feminist issues, specifically reproductive justice rights, into my college degree. She has also helped me find options to volunteer medically abroad so that I can experience a situation alike the profession I am aspiring to be in. The Internet resources provided by OSU and BuckeyeLink has helped immensely in planning out my 4 years at the college. My professors have also helped me immensely with. Lastly my friends, peer mentor, and upperclassmen in other clubs have played a large part in not only making me feel comfortable on campus but also guiding me along the right path. It is comforting to hear from and get advice from upperclassmen because they had just experienced the difficulties that I am currently going through and they can provide thoughtful but educated insight as well as comforting anecdotes about their freshman year. My friends are interested in the same health career path as I am which helps immensely as a support group to study and volunteer with, chat with, go to the gym with and just be around.

I’m Vibha! I’m from a huge and football fanatical high school near Pittsburgh, PA so I feel so at home, here, at OSU! My favorite activities in high school were field hockey, dance, student government, dance marathon, and research! I’m a neuroscience major on the pre-med track. I’m planning of minoring in Women’s Studies and Physical Anthropology. 🙂
