This prototype was designed to show what a multi-faceted set of waste bins could look like. In this set, a recycling bin is connected to a trash bin via a ramp. The recycling bin is atop of a box in the picture, but in a more realized model, the recycling bin would be taller. For the non cans and bottles, the waste will slide down the ramp into the trash bin. The ramp and trash cover are made out of cardboard, but would ideally be made with a non-stick, low friction, material.
The prototype also has visual signs on the sides of the bins to signal what can be placed inside. In addition, there is also a button on the side of the recycling bin that will state what can be placed inside. This would be most beneficial for the blind or for someone that doesn’t understand the signs.
On the paper design, there were also holes on the sides of the bins. These would aid the airflow of the garbage bags when removing and installing them.
This prototype was nice for providing a physical representation of what I wanted to see from my design. I want to implement some of the group member bin features in order to create the best waste bin. With further iterations, our group should be able to create something that is very useful.
