Reading RACES is a software program that is considered to be a form of computer-assisted instruction (CAI). CAI refers to the use of the computer as an interactive instructional tool that can facilitate learning in the classroom.  Essentially, the computer presents the instructional material, tests student understanding, and monitors student responding.  Typically, CAI programs include the use of text, graphics, sound, and video that are very motivating and appealing to a variety of students.

This CAI reading fluency program will:

1       Present students with short stories,

2      Model reading the stories for the students,

3      Use speech recognition software to give students an opportunity to practice by reading aloud (repeated readings),

4      Provide immediate corrective and reinforcing feedback to the student,

5      Summarize student performance, upon reaching mastery on the 1-min timing,

6      Provide a corresponding maze comprehension assessment and record student responses,

7       Summarize and store voice recordings, correct words per minute, errors made, and maze comprehension score, and

8      Advance student to the next story or direct them back to practice according to reading performance.
