Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: This past summer, I shadowed health practitioners in England. Spending two weeks abroad shadowing really opened my eyes about what medicine is like in another country. In addition to this, I am currently pursuing a global public health minor. This minor gives me the opportunity to learn about health care on a global level. I also took part in the Indian American Association (IAA) student organization on campus last year, an organization that brings together many Indian Americans on campus. I plan to continue working towards this goal by taking a couple courses that revolve around global studies.

Original Inquiry: As a freshman, I joined a basic science cancer research lab, where I observed samples of blood smears that were possibly cancerous. During the first semester of my sophomore year, I was involved in an anesthesiology clinical lab, where I did some data analysis of clinical trials. Both of these experiences helped me better understand the research process. I will be joining a neuroscience basic research lab and dedicating most of my time to it this summer, so I hope to gain a deeper understanding through it.

Academic Enrichment: My Honors Contract demonstrates my commitment to undertaking a challenging and educational course load. During my freshman year, I took the honors chemistry route in order to gain a stronger and deeper understanding of general chemistry. In addition, I plan to take GE’s that revolve around subjects that interest and challenge me. I chose neuroscience as my major because it leaves me wanting to learn more and keeps me on my toes. Even though I am taking challenging courses, my goal is to still achieve some of the best grades in my classes.

Leadership Development: Throughout my freshman year, I dipped my feet into many student organizations on campus. I realized which ones I was most interested in this year and dedicated more time to those groups. Recently, I was accepted into Chimes, a junior class honorary on campus. A week later, I was elected as President and am currently working to achieve the goals I had set for our group if I were to get elected. In addition, I am currently applying to be a Neuroscience Ambassador as mentoring younger students has always been one of my passions. These opportunities reflect my career goal of wanting to be a physician by assisting others in any ways I can.

Service Engagement: I have involved myself in many service activities on campus including volunteering at Riverside and the James, helping out with the Homecoming Parade both years, participating in MLK Day of Service as a Site Leader, taking part in the OWL program as an OWL-Coordinator, as well as assisting as a model for Ultrafest. These activities have greatly helped me engage with the community both on campus as well as in Columbus. I plan to continue participating in various service activities on campus.

About Me

When I see someone who looks lost in the middle of a building I am very familiar with, it is my natural instinct to go up to that person and offer him or her my help. My life revolves around caring for those in my life as well as giving to those that need that little extra bit of assistance; and this is where my passion for science comes in. The human body amazes me by the amount of tears and discomfort it can cause due to pain. When putting a smile on a person’s face is what brings me joy and keeps my engines running, shouldn’t I work in a field like medicine that gives endless happiness? As a pre-med student at The Ohio State University, I hope to take away an excessive amount of knowledge and an immense amount of experiences through volunteering and internships that will lead me to the doctor I hope to be one day.

From a very young age, I always yearned to be one thing in life: a pediatrician. I wanted to grow up and be a doctor like my father, but I did not want to treat adults like he does. Instead, I wanted to treat little children and make them smile. All children have a hold on me; the minute I see them, a smile breaks onto my face. I want to do the same for them. When a child walks into my office, I want to be able to turn their frown upside down by treating their upset tummy or dirty little rashes. If children have the ability to make my tears disappear, I should have that same ability. I aspire to follow in my father and brother’s footsteps and become a health professional just like them.
