At Ohio State, I intend to pursue the G.O.A.L.S set forth by the Honors and Scholars program in order to enrich my college experience.
For Global Awareness, I will strive to be a global citizen my continuing to be a member of the campus organization Advocates for Women of the World. This group works to help women in need both locally and internationally through fundraising and organized events, and it is an action-based group that I have loved working with thus far. I will also choose courses that relate to global studies and diversity issues. For example, next semester I will be taking Global Sexual Economies. This class teaches how women’s bodies are regulated worldwide, exploring aspects like class, race and citizenship.
In order to pursue Original Inquiry, I will consider doing research in the field of communication. I have always been curious about the way people communicate with one another, and I am lucky to attend a research university that will help me explore that passion. I have intentions of writing a book while here at Ohio State. I want to be able to express myself in a way that feels true to who I am as a writer. When I figure out what I want to write about, I look forward to utilizing the resources at Ohio State in order to do so.
Academic Enrichment is extremely important to me. I chose journalism as my major because it allows me to explore multiple areas of our world without completely committing to just one, and I get to use my passion for writing to tell others about it. I am very excited to take Global Sexual Economies and Solving Crime in Medieval Europe next semester. These GEs allow me to explore my curiosity regarding the female experience and historical crime. I believe that my course selections demonstrate my desire to learn about the world around me while developing my love for writing about it.
To develop my leadership skills, I am currently heavily involved in Advocates for Women of the World. While I have been working with the Reproductive Rights committee this fall, I will be trying to launch a Body Positivity committee in the spring by developing projects and events with a team. I am a reporter for The Lantern, which has taught me independence and fearlessness while working with a talented group. I write for Odyssey, an online platform for college students, and this has encouraged me to explore what is important to me as a writer. I write for the Her Campus chapter at Ohio State, which allowed me to start my football column, Femme Football. This column has tested me as a writer, pushing me to new heights with tight deadlines and different content each week, but I spear-headed this initiative to expand our chapter to include sports. I look forward to applying to internships and perhaps working as a tour guide at Ohio State.
As far as Service Engagement, I have been working with Advocates for Women of the World on many projects. We have raised funds to send menstrual products to the victims of the hurricane disasters in the U.S. and Puerto Rico by hosting a bake sale. We also ran a menstrual product drive to create hygiene kits for the women’s shelter in Columbus, and by doing this we collected over 5,000 individual products. In the future, we look forward to doing work with Planned Parenthood. AWOW offers so many service opportunities here in the city of Columbus that I look forward to utilizing during my time at Ohio State.
