My G.O.A.L.S For My Academic Career

At Ohio State, I intend to pursue the G.O.A.L.S set forth by the Honors and Scholars program in order to enrich my college experience.

For Global Awareness, I will strive to be a global citizen my continuing to be a member of the campus organization Advocates for Women of the World. This group works to help women in need both locally and internationally through fundraising and organized events, and it is an action-based group that I have loved working with thus far. I will also choose courses that relate to global studies and diversity issues. For example, next semester I will be taking Global Sexual Economies. This class teaches how women’s bodies are regulated worldwide, exploring aspects like class, race and citizenship.

In order to pursue Original Inquiry, I will consider doing research in the field of communication. I have always been curious about the way people communicate with one another, and I am lucky to attend a research university that will help me explore that passion. I have intentions of writing a book while here at Ohio State. I want to be able to express myself in a way that feels true to who I am as a writer. When I figure out what I want to write about, I look forward to utilizing the resources at Ohio State in order to do so.

Academic Enrichment is extremely important to me. I chose journalism as my major because it allows me to explore multiple areas of our world without completely committing to just one, and I get to use my passion for writing to tell others about it. I am very excited to take Global Sexual Economies and Solving Crime in Medieval Europe next semester. These GEs allow me to explore my curiosity regarding the female experience and historical crime. I believe that my course selections demonstrate my desire to learn about the world around me while developing my love for writing about it.

To develop my leadership skills, I am currently heavily involved in Advocates for Women of the World. While I have been working with the Reproductive Rights committee this fall, I will be trying to launch a Body Positivity committee in the spring by developing projects and events with a team. I am a reporter for The Lantern, which has taught me independence and fearlessness while working with a talented group. I write for Odyssey, an online platform for college students, and this has encouraged me to explore what is important to me as a writer. I write for the Her Campus chapter at Ohio State, which allowed me to start my football column, Femme Football. This column has tested me as a writer, pushing me to new heights with tight deadlines and different content each week, but I spear-headed this initiative to expand our chapter to include sports. I look forward to applying to internships and perhaps working as a tour guide at Ohio State.

As far as Service Engagement, I have been working with Advocates for Women of the World on many projects. We have raised funds to send menstrual products to the victims of the hurricane disasters in the U.S. and Puerto Rico by hosting a bake sale. We also ran a menstrual product drive to create hygiene kits for the women’s shelter in Columbus, and by doing this we collected over 5,000 individual products. In the future, we look forward to doing work with Planned Parenthood. AWOW offers so many service opportunities here in the city of Columbus that I look forward to utilizing during my time at Ohio State.

How is it already Thanksgiving?

The first semester of college has absolutely flown by. When I started at OSU, I had no idea what to expect from myself. It’s nerve-wracking being on your own for the first time, but I felt ready. The past few months have proven that I was ready, but definitely had some growing to do. I still have to work hard in math, but I’ve accepted that, and writing for The Lantern is so exciting. I had to relearn how to make friends, which sounds strange coming from a college-age girl, but it’s true; I haven’t had to do it in so long, but the experience has been refreshing. I am enjoying the freedom of college life, but there’s still so much I have to learn. As this semester wraps up, I’ll be finished with a few GE requirements, and next semester I will be moving on to more major work and some very interesting GEs. Stay tuned!

A Piece of Her Own

Here at Ohio State, I am a reporter for The Lantern, the school paper. I jumped right in as soon as I got on campus and began working hard. Although this article was not my first for The Lantern (or my front page print article), I am particularly proud of this one. I calculated the bike thefts by hand and searched the entire student body for people who had their bikes stolen, tracking down strangers and conducting interviews. I can truly say that this is a work I put my all into, and I am pleased with the result.

Who is she, anyway?

My name is Sam Raudins, and I’m from North Royalton, Ohio. As I begin my first year at OSU, I bring with me the experiences of being president of National Honor Society and a devoted member of the theater, as well as a passion for writing. I plan on majoring in journalism and perhaps minoring in something data related, which reflects the fact that I am a creative, yet logical, thinker. I love football and have a passion for the truth. To me, journalism is the perfect path; with this career, I am able to explore so many different facets of the world around me without having to stick with only one, and this suits my curiosity very well. I am a born and raised Buckeye who loves her school and who can’t wait to see what the future has in store!
