Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

I plan on understanding and appreciating Global Awareness by traveling abroad during my undergraduate studies. Because I want to go to medical school, I thought it would be a life-changing and enriching experience to travel to an impoverished part of the world where not everyone has access to healthcare and provide some aid. Whether it be through an organization like Doctors without Borders, I think it would be a very impactful experience and help me develop an appreciation for diversity and understanding that not everyone has the same luxuries that I do.

During the next four years, I plan on conducting research in a lab with one of my professors. I think it is very helpful in opening up my mind to questions and ideas that I normally wouldn’t have, get me thinking abstractly and out of the box, and help round out my resume to be an excellent candidate for medical school.

I plan on going to medical school, and in order to be a competitive applicant there are certain courses that are required. These courses, such as organic chemistry, biochemistry, etc. are often prerequisites, and they are extremely challenging. Medical schools do this to see who is truly a competitive applicant for their school, and who has what it takes to handle the stress and pressure of attending their medical school. Therefore, I plan on taking many, if not all of these courses, in order to make myself a competitive applicant. These courses are extremely difficult and challenging, and they will broaden and expand my thinking to new levels, and make me a more intelligent and well rounded student.

To fulfill leadership, I plan on joining a few niche clubs that I am really interested in, and working my way up to an executive board position. I think it is more impactful to be in a few clubs that are very meaningful, rather than many useless clubs that don’t change your life or inspire a passion within you. If I am passionate about a few of these clubs, I can strive to put my all into them, and take on a bigger leadership role within the club that can last several years and round out my medical school application.

Volunteering and community service is a huge part of what I want to do here at OSU. I plan on trying to be part of as many volunteering opportunities as I can. If I have time during the school year, I plan on joining some clubs that are volunteering driven, and gaining several hours that way. If I don’t have time during the school year, I plan on attaining those volunteer hours outside of school. During the summers and winter break back home, I hope to volunteer at a hospital or retirement home, not only to gain volunteer hours, but also to gain clinical hours and exposure as well.
