Global Awareness

Thanks to the grand opportunities provided by The Ohio State University, particularly at the club fair held during the first week, I have been able to develop a more global perspective through Shades, an LGBTQ+ club for colored people. Growing up in a place with very few black people, it’s been an amazing experience to meet and hang out with people who share both my ethnicity and sexuality. It’s been beyond enlightening and has helped me learn more about others’ struggles and experiences through the discussions we have. I intend to remain a part of this club to learn about others’ perspectives and be a part of the community. In the future, I think joining one of the African American and African Studies courses would also be a wonderful way to expand my perspective as well.

Original Inquiry

As an undergraduate student, I’ve already taken part in the REP experiments for my Psychology 1100H class, which are meant to further psychological study. In the future, even if I won’t receive credit for it, I think I’ll try to enroll in some of the experiments again if not to aid the people conducting the experiment then to help further my own understanding. Maybe I’ll even conduct my own psychological experiment at The Ohio State University.

Academic Enrichment

As I am currently without a decided major or minor, I am earning my General Education requirements which have been quite enlightening on their own. In my Biology 1113 Lab, I’ve been conducting experiments with phage and learning about their usefulness in fighting and curing diseases. It’s an amazing opportunity to learn about their uses while actually finding them in lab. Even so, this experience has allowed me to see another side of the sciences which leaves me curious as to what the arts can offer. My general education classes have already given me an idea as to where I might continue searching for my potential majors and minors.

Leadership Development

Again, Shades has been an amazing opportunity for me, even when it comes to leadership opportunities. Through Shades, I’ve seen what a positive influence and kindness can do for people who may have otherwise felt ostracized and alone. I think it would be absolutely amazing to present similar opportunities to others, both inside and outside of the club.

Service Engagement

In Boxing Club, members are required to take part in an activity to help the community once per semester, and I’m excited to be able to contribute. I think having a required act of community service will help me to become more open to the idea whereas I’ve been a bit scared of stepping out of my comfort zone before.
