Reflection

Some challenges with my assignment was the composition and making sure the whole space was filled. I drew with the paper being vertical and realized that I could have drawn the still life with the paper being horizontal. I could also work on my mark making, creating more value in my work by using different materials and techniques. Something that helped with the mark making was the use of cotton balls and forks, these created different and unique lines in my artwork. I saw hao other people used their negative and positive space. The background was painted and some were all black, while others were the desk and the walls. When seeing these approaches to give their artwork that much more depth, I decided that I will also do that in my drawing the next time. Filling in the background gives the viewer a much more clean and clean drawing while also making the drawing pop out even more. One of the riskiest things I did when painting this artwork was using objects other than a brush to create lines.I used cotton balls and a fork to create dots, lines and fuzz for a stuffed animal. These lines made me have less control, but I liked the end result. Another thing I did was dilute the ink in water to help shade and create a gradient of shades in my artwork. Some critique that I will take away from this is to use my space more wisely, next time I will do a better job at that because it’s important to not have so much empty space.

  1. Hi Raman, great reflection! I think your points about empty space are good. Negative space, or empty space, can actually play a very important role in a drawing! It is helpful to consider how it is functioning in relationship with your composition! I am intrigued by this rearrangement of objects in your pencil drawing – there is more overlap here. I really appreciated the story you described that is behind the arrangement, where these artifacts of your different past times / activities you enjoy almost create a timeline or archive your life.
