Service Project Summary

My Service Project took place in the Dodd Rehabilitation Hospital of the Wexner Medical Center at the Ohio State University. The Dodd Rehabilitation Hospital focuses on helping individuals to get back on their feet after experiencing disabilities caused by trauma, congenital diseases, illness, etc. using various kinds of therapy including: physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, etc. At the Dodd Rehabilitation Hospital I worked with doctors and nurses in assisting with the patients’ needs and any other tasks that the physicians or nurses asked for. As a volunteer I worked with a multitude of patients in a variety of tasks including: bringing dinner to patients, moving patients to therapy sessions or to the cafeteria, talking with the patients or keeping the patients company, and getting linens for the patients. I also helped the nurses and doctors by refilling supplies, replacing towels, and wiping down tables. The volunteer position has allowed me to mature and has been a positive experience overall. It has allowed me to become more professional and has given me new insight into what it is like working in a hospital setting.

Informational Interview: “Academic Enrichment”

For my professional development meeting I met with and interviewed Govind Warrier. Govind is currently a medical student at the University of Louisville and will be doing his residency at the University of Michigan in the near future. During our meeting I was able to ask a variety of questions regarding the challenges that are presented in medical school, the process of applying to medical school, how to mage my time wisely in medical school, how to prepare for the MCAT, what medical schools are looking for in undergraduates, etc. For him the process of getting into medical school was equally challenging as actually taking classes in medical school. He told me that managing your time in medical school is essential in doing well in and out of the classes. Govind is also planning to go into internal medicine so I asked him how he came to choose that path and if he was ever leaning towards specializing in anything else. He told me that once you are in medical school your interests in the different paths or specializations becomes more apparent. Overall the meeting was very informational and has allowed me to obtain a better understanding on how medical school works and what the overall process of getting into medical school is like.

Year In Review

Before I came to OSU I was a nervous, anxious high schooler who had no idea what college was like. When I first came to college I was astounded at the sights, sounds, and smells. This was a new chapter for me in my life. When I realized I was apart of HSS I was extremely excited. I believed that being apart of this group would help me get service opportunities, research opportunities, etc. As the year went on I realized that college was a whole other setting then high school. It requires more hard work and studying. At first I was caught off guard, but as the year went on I got used to the rigorous course work and studying that came with subject. My goals for my 2nd year in HSS includes: involving myself in more service opportunities, getting a higher GPA, and getting into a research lab through HSS. My most memorable service experience was my first experience with volunteering. I currently volunteer at the Wexner Stroke Center. Here I wheel around patients, keep the patients company, and help the nurses with their help. I started in early February 2016. My first memory of doing this volunteering was wheeling a patient from lunch to their physical therapy. This was my most memorable because it was the first time I had actual interaction with patients who had a long lasting problem. I was able to talk to the patients about their problems, how their day was going, what their schedule was like, etc. This experience was surreal because it allowed me to understand how to take care of patients, and it also gave me a small insight into a doctor’s daily schedule. Next year I plan on continuing volunteering and excelling at my classes in college.

Do

For my eat-go-do project I decided to do a variety of activities that were out of my comfort zone. For the do section I decided to go to the Short North and go to the North Market. The North Market is a public market where approximately 30 merchants vend a variety of authentic food from Polish to Spanish food. The North Market has an international selection of freshly prepared foods. When I visited the North Market I went to the Flavors of India. There I was able to have authentic Indian food such as Naan and authentic Indian curries.

Go

For my eat-go-do project I decided to do a variety of activities that were out of my comfort zone. For the do section I went onto an eno hammock. I have never gone onto an eno before and the first time I went onto it was a Friday. I went on in a nice, breezy day near Mirror Lake. There I was able to lay peacefully and stress-free. I went with Shreya Barde and we laid in the eno hammock for more than an hour. I would recommend to do this activity because it is relaxing and definitely puts you out of your comfort zone.

Eat

For my eat-go-do project I decided to do a variety of activities that were out of my comfort zone. For the eat section I decided to go to the Short North (in Columbus) and eat at Buca di Beppo. I have never gone to this place before so I didn’t know what to expect. This is a family-oriented Italian restaurant. There they serve a variety of foods including pasta, meatballs, ricotta, fritters, tortelloni, etc. I went with Pallavi Mannava, and we had pasta and meatballs. I would recommend going there again for any people who haven’t gone before.FullSizeRender (2)

Career

When I first came to The Ohio State University I was anxious and kind of confused. I was set on my major (Neuroscience), but I wasn’t entirely sure on what I was going to do with it. By the second week of classes I was more settled into the college routine, yet I still didn’t know the best places to study on campus or how I was going to be able to balance my academics and my extracurricular activities. However this all began to change as I went through the HSS life plan assignment. As I progressed through the objectives I began to learn more and more about OSU as a whole, and how I can lead my life (at OSU) in a positive and progressive manner. Now I am able to understand how I can use Neuroscience (my major) to help me get into medical school and get a health-related job. I have realized that the best place to study on campus is the 3rd floor of Thompson Library in the Grand Reading Room. Obstacles like balancing academics and extracurricular activities are easy to overcome as I know make time tables for every week, allotting time for certain activities on certain days. The assignment also made me interview an upperclassman which allowed me to get more insight into OSU from someone who has already gone through the motions. From their knowledge I have found out how to utilize HSS in my benefit, and that it will help me in the long run to get to know my professors better both for getting help and for getting recommendation letters. Although this assignment has taught me a lot, I know I can still grow. I plan on learning more about how OSU can help me progress both mentally and physically.
