Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

  • Global Awareness: In order to gain a better understanding of cultures around the world and to gain a holistic understanding of specifically East Asian cultures, I plan to study abroad for a semester in China and Japan. I would like to gain a different Asian perspective other than the one that I own, and spending a semester in Shanghai or Tokyo would aid in the development of such a perspective.
  • Original Inquiry: College is all about finding answers to your questions. In order to engage in original inquiry, I plan to get involved in undergraduate research. I am really interested in the use of embryonic stem cells; I would like to research the therapeutic uses and abilities of embryonic stem cells. I intend to secure a research opportunity by the end of my junior year.
  • Academic Enrichment: As an Honors student, I am challenged to take more rigorous courses than the average student. I have done so this semester by taking two honors courses, and I plan to take more during my time here at OSU. I’ve chosen Neuroscience as my major because I am interested in understanding and learning more about the control center of our bodies; I also wanted a major in which I could incorporate psychology as well as create a strong base for medical school. The minor I’ve chosen is Bioethics; this minor will go hand in hand with the research I intend to do because there are many ethical issues that arise with the use of embryonic stem cells.
  • Leadership Development: So far, I have taken a small leadership step in my Taylor Tower community and have become a floor representative on the Taylor Tower Hall Council. This opportunity has developed my leadership personality as people on the 3rd floor have come to me with their issues and ideas and I have taken initiative and informed my executive committee. Also, I wish to become a sophomore representative next year in the IAA, which will enable me to develop my networking and social skills, which are both skills I will need in medical school and in any medical profession.
  • Service Engagement: As of now, I have completed only one service activity in which I volunteered at a blood drive. At this blood drive, I was required to recruit people to donate blood and me and my peers were actually not very successful in getting people to; this shed light on the bigger social problem of people not donating enough blood nationwide. I do, however, plan to volunteer at Nationwide hospital soon, to be more exposed to the hospital environment in order to prepare for medical school.
