A Year in Review

As an international affairs scholars I have learned about time management and how scheduled is very important when trying to get through each semester. IA has taught me to that where I write out a majority of events I plan to go to so I can see how it works in my scheduled and to check that I have time to do it. IA has helped me to grow over the school year in a stronger, independent, young adult. It was hard to go from having parents that cooked and cleaned, to them being states away. The jump happened so quickly at the beginning of the year and nothing of the planning my parents and I promised to do actually happened. It was hard to keep track of my schedule where there was no one checking up on me anymore and it was hard to find that motivation to go to 8 am lectures. I managed to pull through this slump and learn the importance of class and lectures, no matter how much I hate them or don’t want to go. I have also learned to watch my health a little more in the sense that I don’t try to eat anything I want just because. College is a freedom that I don’t aim to abuse and cause my freedom to become restricted.

This building has been my home for the past eight months and now I only have another two weeks left until the school year is over. It is amazing how much this single building has had an impact on my life. It has become my home away from home where I now have my own little family. My roommate is one of my best friends here at Ohio State and another best friend lives in the room right next store. It amazing how without this single building I wouldn’t have met some of my best friends or made some of my greatest memories. Some of the best nights were movies nights in the dorm where my friends and I just sat around and talked until late at night. These have also witnessed some of the worst memories, like numerous fights with my best friend from home. Moving from another state was very difficult and the transition into college was that much easier because of this very building. Another bonus was that it was always easy to find and getting lost wasn’t too bad.

My Phone

iPhone

It sometimes upsets me at how much I now rely on my phone since the start of college. For all of the years I have owned my cell phone I have never relied on it for much. I would only have basic social media apps and maybe a game or two, but I didn’t have it on my 24/7 or checked it every few minutes. I could go a whole day without needing my phone, now I feel in a panic if I forget it my dorm room. I don’t blame this new need on college, but as part my transition to college I have noticed that I have more of an attachment to my phone. I guess my phone is my main source of communication with the people I value the most in my life. My best friends and my family are all 550 miles away; a ten hour drive or a 90 minute plane ride away. A lot of my peers can either go home for the weekend if they want. I don’t have that opportunity. Since I can’t see them easily I rely on my phone. I am always checking to see if my parents texted or called me. I no longer only text them when I got home after school, I now will call them for hours on end just to catch up on everything going on. I FaceTime my best friend a few times a week because I miss her and I get so worried about her. She isn’t around the block from me and I no longer can run to her when I am upset. I try to call my sister as much as possible but it is hard to be supportive of her during her pregnancy. She has never lived more than a few hours away from me and now she is extremely far. There is so much that is going on at home and the only way to be included is through my phone. My phone is my only life line to home and without it I would be lost in the dark. It is amazing how much more I use my phone just because I want and need to stay in touch with my family. I didn’t worry about my phone because everyone I needed was close to me, not more than a car ride away. Now that everyone is hundreds of miles away from me my phone has become one of the most important things in my life. My phone is the only way I can get comfort from family and my best friend, the daily calls and texts I get/make provide the biggest support for me while at college.

Civic

At the moment I don’t feel like I belong is any one place. I am still trying to find my place at college and sometimes I feel like I don’t have the same place I did at home. My best friends are getting closer friends while they are at home and I’m at Ohio State University making new friends. At the moment I don’t really feel like I have a place that I belong to, but I am slowly getting there. I am still working on the core group of friends that will be here for me when no one else is. I am finding my way in the business school and I am trying to make my presence known in various business related events. I do see myself thriving in Greek life here at Ohio State University. I do plan on joining a sorority and I hope that I will find my place there and feel like I belong more. At my community at home I would help tutor kids in my high school who were struggling with class, especially those struggling with math related courses and some science courses. I also would teach younger girls how to play softball to encourage that they stick with softball while helping them improve their skills. In my town, softball was a dying sport and this clinic help by the varsity softball players was a good way to encourage girls to stick with it. Here at Ohio State I aim to do more community service work; this is also another reason I want to join a sorority. Sororities are very involved in giving back and do philanthropic work for the community and this will be my main way of giving back to the community I am now apart of. As a sorority we will not only give back to Ohio State University, but also Columbus and maybe even further beyond Columbus.

Professional

At the moment, I am draw to accounting as a career. Within accounting there are several different pathways I can take like whether I want to specialize in audit or tax or another form of accounting, this is where I have almost no idea as to what I want to do. I just know accounting is the path for me. I have always loved math, even as a kid. There is always a direct and right answer to a problem. I have also always been draw to the law and the world of business. Accounting combines my two favorite things; math and business. Accounting gives the numbers I use a meaning and purpose in people’s lives. In the future I hope to become a forensic accountant and maybe even work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. As a forensic accountant I would be going through records trying to find flaws that is a result of someone breaking the law. This would include my childhood dream of becoming a detective. A lot of kids wanted to be a singer or actor, but I wanted to be a detective. Like a majority of kids, this was a dream because a detective requires me to be a police officer, which isn’t for me. Other than that accounting gives numbers a meaning and various classes I took in high school not much else drove me to be an accountant. My mother is a tax accountant and she is helped me figured that accounting would be the perfect career for me. I have never worked with accountants or done accounting work. In the future, I aim to make a difference when working for the FBI. This is where I hope to help solve crime and serve justice to those trying to go around the rules and cheat the system. Maybe I can help take down someone really big in crime, similar to how Al Capone was able to be taken down because he was found guilty of tax evasion. Although Al Capone was the reason for numerous crimes, officials were never able to pin it on Capone or link him to the crimes; except for tax evasion.

Academic Information

I am in college to not only get an education, but to also make connections in my life. Not only do I want to gain professional relationship, but also social relationships. These relationships will last longer than the knowledge I gain from my introduction to psychology class that I am currently taking. Although the class is very interesting and I know all of the information now, but honestly all of the information will not be retained and I will not remember all the different parts of the eye. I will remember my current peer adviser and who she is helping me getting involved my freshman year of college. I will remember that professor that made a different in my academic career and help me. Various courses will be important, like my computer science and engineering class that I am currently taking because I am thinking of minoring in something STEM related. A recruiter who recently spoke to me left me with a great motto when it comes to getting a job in the business; he said, “its not what you know, but who knows you.” I want to be known for my academics. I want to be known for my personally and characteristics that make me unique. This is what I want out of my college experience and time at the Ohio State University.

My time in high school and my hard work has lead me to the Ohio State University and I didn’t do it by myself. With the help of my family encouraging me to follow my heart and go to where I felt most at home to teachers that might not remember me, but I certainly remember them. I remember the teacher I had for my first introduction to accounting course. At the time I was a scared sophomore, because there only a hand full of sophomores in the class full of juniors and seniors and out of the sophomores I want the only girl. It was hard to go into that class with no friends, but my teacher made me feel comfortable in the class. The material also came very easily to me and I ended up helping out a lot upper class-man. Along with this class, my college accounting class showed me how numbers can have a greater meaning. This lead me to where I am now; being in the Fisher School of Business ready to pursue a major in accounting. With this major I intend to be part of the honors accounting program and maybe even stay a fifth year at Ohio State University to get my MBA and be ready to take the CPA exam when I eventually return to New York. The main goal is to study hard, get grades, make connections, and get back to New York to be with my family.
