Adrielys Calderon Ortiz (she/her/hers)

Features Editor, M.A. Graduate Student, Comparative Studies

Adrielys is a Puerto Rican island-born graduate student in the Department of Comparative Studies. Her love for literature earned her a B.A. in Comparative Literature and Hispanic Studies from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras campus. She is currently completing her M.A. degree, which focuses on Latinx Children and Young Adult Literature of speculative fiction and Monster Studies. She finds fascinating the critical analysis of “monsters” and the concept of the “Other,” which is visible in her current research on re-imaginations of Hispanic and Latinx myths and legends in middle-grade fantasy literature. By analyzing this literature, she believes we can observe how engaging with a Latinx legendary monster universe creates opportunities to empower the cross-cultural identities of young Latinx readers. Furthermore, she is currently the Features Editor of ¿Qué Pasa, Ohio State? and enjoys working with the wonderful group of people who put their hearts and souls into the creation, writing, and publication of this student-led magazine by students and for students.

Her passion for reading, monsters, and cultures has led her to pursue research to understand what stories and characters in literature say to us. Thus, she believes that their exploration will help us understand the influences and impacts they have on readerships concerning social/racial justice and inclusion.

“If monsters and people of color inhabit the same place in our stories, what would it be like to read monster theory from the monster’s perspective?” (20)       – Ebony Elizabeth Thomas, The Dark Fantastic: Race and the Imagination from Harry Potter to The Hunger Games.
