Year in Review

During my sophomore year at Ohio State, I have made a lot of progress toward achieving my professional and personal goals. In autumn, I attended weekly meetings with my STEP (Second-year Transformational Experience Program) cohort. At these meetings, I talked with my peers and explored different project ideas that would enhance my experience at Ohio State. I decided that an Education Abroad trip would be very beneficial to help me make progress toward my degree and expand my world-view. Next summer, I hope to travel to North Queensland in Australia to learn about the human impact on the natural environment, which can be clearly seen in the Great Barrier Reef.

This summer, I am returning to the Cleveland Clinic to work in a lab on main campus. This lab, which I have been involved with for the last two summers, has helped me develop professionally and has given me great hands-on experience in the field I wish to enter. I also hope to take part in research on campus at Ohio State, hopefully before the start of my junior year.

As a biology major, many of my classes can be very science-intensive. This is why I chose a history minor. In high school, I thoroughly enjoyed history classes, especially American history. This spring, I took my first history course at Ohio State, History of HIV. This course brought together both my major and minor, as it takes both a scientific and historical approach to HIV/AIDS. I also have enjoyed one honors GE that I took in autumn, Intro to Theatre. Throughout the semester, I attended six live performances at the Wexner and the Drake Center.

During my junior year, I will be a peer mentor for the Arts and Sciences Honors Program. I hope that the training and the peer-to-peer experiences will help me become a stronger leader here at Ohio State. I also plan on being on the Executive Board for a volunteer program that I have been involved in, Scientific Thinkers. For this program, I travel to local elementary schools to provide a hands-on science experience for young children. Becoming more involved in this program will also help me develop as a leader.

As mentioned before, I will continue to volunteer for Scientific Thinkers at Mansion Day Elementary and Innis Elementary. My experiences volunteering for this program have been very enjoyable and valuable to me. This year I have also participated in the Wishmakers on Campus club. One of the goals for this club is to fundraise for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants children with critical illnesses a wish. One fundraising activity that I recently took part in for this club was a basketball tournament at the RPAC.

Global Awareness:
In order to work toward global awareness, I plan on studying abroad. I hope to study abroad in Dresden after the spring semester to work towards a second minor, German. I also plan on continuing to study my foreign language, German.

Original Inquiry:

To work toward the goal of original inquiry, I plan on joining a research lab my second year at Ohio State. Participating in research on campus will enrich my graduate school applications and will most importantly make me more prepared for a future career. I also plan on continuing to intern during the summers after school to work toward the goal of original inquiry.

Academic Enrichment:

I plan on using my Academic Plan to create a program of study that serves my academic and professional interests and needs by continuing to take challenging courses, such as honors courses. These courses will enrich my graduate school applications and help me be more prepared for graduate school. I chose a Biology major and a History minor because I felt that the pre-requisite and required courses for Biology and History most closely aligned with my career and personal interests.

Leadership Development:

In order to be involved outside of the classroom, I plan on possibly having a leadership position in the Pre-Medicine Club, a club I am currently involved with. This will improve my application because it will indicate that I have taken initiative outside the classroom.

Service Engagement:

Participating in community service is very important to me, so I will continue with the service organizations I was already involved with before I came to Ohio State. I also plan on volunteering for the Red Cross and hopefully becoming a volunteer EMT in the future.

This is my research poster from my 2017 internship at the Cleveland Clinic. I studied the effects of a thaw on various types of tissue. The tissues were tested for DNA, RNA, and testing quality. I was very surprised to discover that thawing the tissues had a minimal effect on their quality. This discovery created an intensive to increase the low-temperature freezers at the Clinic, therefore saving on energy and costs.

About Me

Hello! My name is Kayleigh Queiser and I am from Hudson, Ohio. As a first-year student at The Ohio State University, I am very eager to see what the coming four years have in store for me. I hope to gain experiences that will help me in my coming semesters at this university.

The summer before senior year, I began my first internship. I was accepted into the Science Internship Program at the Cleveland Clinic as a laboratory medicine intern. For seven weeks, I worked with my mentor, a molecular pathologist, on a research project that created the foundation for a data analytics dashboard that would be used in the laboratory. The following two weeks I spent shadowing doctors, nurses, and surgeons. The summer after my senior year, I returned to the Cleveland Clinic as a laboratory medicine intern. My research focused on the low-temperature freezers found throughout the Cleveland Clinic’s laboratories and research laboratories. The nine weeks I spent in anatomical pathology piqued my interest in human anatomy, tissues, and fluids. I am considering applying to pathologist assistant programs after the completion of my undergraduate degree because of this experience.

Throughout high school, history classes clenched my interest. I loved learning about topics ranging from ancient civilizations to recent American history. Studying history was almost like watching Netflix: I frequently flipped through my American History textbook, reading ahead purely out of interest. Due to my love of the past, I decided to declare a minor in history.

I am very eager to take advantage of the many opportunities that Ohio State will provide during my time on campus!
