Gregory Charles – A Performer in and for the 21st Century

Gregory Charles, a prize-winning classical pianist, conductor and choral enthusiast turned singer-songwriter, has performed with the greatest names in show business. This musical genius, born to parents of Trinidadian and French Canadian descent, has toured with fellow Canadian Céline Dion and has also sung with the likes of Pavarotti, Streisand, Garth Brooks and Stevie Wonder. His performances are always an exhilarating, mind-boggling, heart-racing, memorable – and interactive – affair. Gregory has toured all over the world and will now bring his unique brand of entertainment to Columbus on September 28 to participate in the outreach seminar Quebec in and for the 21stCentury: Art, Culture and Innovation organized by The Ohio State University, Grandview Heights High School, Denison University, the Quebec Delegation Office in Chicago, and the American Council for Quebec Studies. Gregory will talk about the important role that music has played in affirming Quebec’s distinct linguistic and cultural identity as well as his new virtual program, Je suis Québécois, an innovative online tool designed to help new immigrants learn French and the culture of Quebec to integrate better into Quebec society. This program also pays tribute to Gregory’s late father (a friend of Martin Luther King) who was himself an immigrant and who spent much of his life helping and enriching the lives of other immigrants who decided to make Quebec their home. A polyglot who also knows over 100 songs in Japanese, German, Chinese and Spanish, Gregory will also talk about the importance of learning languages. The seminar is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. and the event will close with a free concert (friends and family welcome) with Gregory Charles at 7:30 p.m. Students will have the rare opportunity to meet informally with Gregory at 9:00 a.m. The seminar and concert are free but ticket reservation is recommended. Please click on the registration link  at the top of this page to reserve tickets. Direct questions to Wynne Wong at wong.240@osu.edu.

We are thrilled to share that we plan to offer, in collaboration with our colleagues at Grandview Heights, certificates for contact hours for high school teachers. We are furthermore delighted that professors from Ohio Wesleyan and Denison will join our colleagues from OSU and from Montreal and Quebec City in our presentations and discussions!

Screening of film, Monsieur Lazhar

To kick off this event, we are pleased to offer a screening of the film Monsieur Lazhar on Friday September 27, 2019 at 6:00 pm at the Gateway Film Center on the campus of the Ohio State University (1550 N High St, Columbus, OH 43201). Admission is free. This film screening is sponsored by Denison University.

Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Monsieur Lazhar tells the poignant story of a Montreal middle school class shaken by the death of their well-liked teacher. Bachir Lazhar, a 55-year-old Algerian immigrant, offers the school his services as a substitute teacher and is quickly hired. As he helps the children heal, he also learns to accept his own painful past. Directed by Philippe Falardeau. (Canada, 2011, 94 minutes). A Q & A will follow the film.
