“QUANTUM APPROACHES TO PEACE, CONFLICT, AND SECURITY”
From the folks who brought you Quantum Boot Camps I-IV
While we have been very happy with our virtual Quantum Boot Camp, it was originally intended to be an in-person event. With the social distancing put in place when we first launched, it was impossible to make that happen, so we pivoted to an online bootcamp. However, this will be the final year of our virtual format – making way for an in-person workshop on quantum social science like we originally intended.
Sponsored by the Carnegie Corporation of New York and Mershon Center for International Security Studies, the workshop will take place in spring 2025 at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Our ultimate goal is to produce an open-access edited volume, showcasing what can be accomplished, theoretically and/or empirically, with a quantum approach to the social and behavioral sciences. The workshop is an opportunity to present and get expert feedback on first drafts of chapters.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
The substantive focus of the workshop will be on issues of peace, conflict, and security. While that includes the state-centric field of International Relations, we are interested in these issues at all levels of analysis, from individuals to groups to states to the world system. As such, the project is intended to go well beyond IR or even political science, not least to show the integrative and trans-disciplinary power of quantum social science.
We envision 20 chapters, a cadre of 10 well-known quantum social scientists who we will solicit, and another 10+ by newer entrants into the field, who we expect to emerge from this call for papers.
PROPOSALS
Successful proposals will propose papers of roughly 6000-8000 words, and could take various forms, including qualitative or quantitative, theoretical or empirical, or normative or positive. Papers could also draw on various items in the quantum tool-kit – quantum game theory, quantum cognition and decision-theory, quantum social theory, quantum epistemology, quantum ethics, and more. The only requirement is that papers address problems of peace, conflict and security – broadly defined to include methodological and philosophical issues that arise in studying them from a quantum perspective.
Beyond our intellectual agenda, we are also interested in growing the quantum social science community, for which an in-person format is best (though hybrid will be an option). In addition to travel and accommodations, participants will receive honoraria for presenting in person and after publication of their chapter in the volume, and we also have funds to cover open-access fees as needed.
If you are interested in being considered for this exciting initiative, please fill out the form below and return it along with an abstract of your proposed chapter by August 15, 2024. We will get back to you as soon as we can.
